iDrive Screen Auto Dim?
Anyone else noticed this?
My iDrive screen seems to dim itself automatically. When in bright sunlight, the text is crisp and bright and white (like in the Black Panel Display) but then it switches to a dirty white colour and dims everything if you say, drive under tree branches. This is all independent of the rotary instrument brightness control (which only works when your lights are on and its proper dark) I also noticed that in the iDrive menus, the Brightness control for the screen says "Brightness at Night" - not just General brightness anytime. Has it always been like this? I'm sure it hasn't. I've tested different scenarios to see when the screen auto dims - as in with Lights set to Auto or off. It makes no difference if the lights are on or off either. Just seems a bit strange and now I've noticed it, it's annoying as when the screen dims it draws my eye to it.... So, before I either a) take it to dealer and tell them something is wrong or b) look for a coding option to turn auto dimming off (if there is one) - what are others experiences/thoughts? Rukka .

Set it where? Can you set top level brightness in daylight though?

Are you sure?? Mine says Settings>Display>Brightness at Night
That seems to be the difference - I can't regulate the brightness during daylight..... .

cheers creepy
Well, that "feature" has gone on the latest software and been replaced with "Brightness at Night" instead. What this means is that the screen automatically dims at every opportunity and it's VERY light sensitive. I found a post over on BabyBMW where someone had accidentally coded "Brightness at Night" and it was driving them mad. They/he just did a recode to defaults ad put it back to the way yours is. Trouble is, mine was like this before I did any coding ......... I'll ask over on the main coding forum if anyone knows where the setting is but guessing its something like "Helligkeit_bei_Nacht" - so I'll have to search in the HU_NBT codes..... Bloody BMW and their updates why can't they leave things alone............. .

Mine still changes when I drive into shade and such like. It's just the max level is controllable.
What about the thump wheel over by the light switch Rukka?

I tried turning the light switch to "off" rather than auto but it made no difference. My 435d wasn't like this. Screen stayed constant brightness during the day. Trouble is, the sensor is really sensitive so it chops and changes brightness a lot .

For anybody reading - I've fixed this
I found the code and changed it back to the settings in the older software. IE - just a Brightness setting like creepy coupe has (and like my 435d was) What I also noticed in the coding was settings for "M" in the HUD and Sports Dials in the HUD too.......... I'll have a play at coding them tomorrow ......... .

Interested in this, although without an M button to record your settings not sure how one would access the functionality on the road.

I noticed after a year of ownership my HUD on the 6 series brightens up when I get near car lights in front at night and then dims back down when the road ahead is clear or the car is a good 20 yards in front.

You will need to code it back to the old version with just "Brightness" as an option and not "Brightness at Night" Go to HU_NBT2 - 3005 Display PIP Info - DIM_VARIANT Value will be set to NEW Simply change the value to OLD That will sort it fella .

I only just really noticed this and now it is really pissing me off. Why the fuck would they 'improve' something that makes it so atrociously worse? And I know bugger all about coding. I wonder if the dealer would revert it back so I can just alter the brightness?
'Brightness at night' - that is just moronic that is. |

Rukka, did you do this yourself or did the dealer do it. I took mine to dealer but they are unsure what to do and are awaiting a response from bmw who say they never heard of it before. Thanks for your help.
