Yeah, that did something similar with mine first, before finally replacing the turbo...something about a spacer or reducer, don't remember exactly, but needless to say it still smoked after, just like yours.

Dealer replaced the turbo. As expected, no smoke on startup. Pretty frustrating that PUMA cases are being returned with "replace oil pipe" when BMW know damn well they have a problem with the turbocharger on the N20. There were two other cars in with the same exact problem while our car was there. Definitely not owning this thing out of warranty.

How many miles are on your vehicles when this starts happening?

I'm seeing between 30-35k miles from a couple on this thread.

Around 30k to 32k miles for ours. I don't remember exactly when it started.

I had this same problem with my '13 328i (N26) and posted my service experience here today and just found this thread now.

They also replaced the oil feed line on mine, and so far it seems ok but to be honest I haven't let it sit more than overnight. The service advisor told me that he has seen several of these recently (5-10) and only 1 customer has come back reporting the problem not fixed, at which time they authorize a turbo replacement. Seems to me there is definitely something wrong with the seals in the turbo... We'll see. My factory warranty expires in 1500 miles but I have CPO warranty for another 50,000. Let's see how it goes.

Do yourself a favor:

1) Use two people to verify the fix. When we let our car sit overnight only, there was a small amount of smoke. I literally had to stand at the back while my wife started the car.

2) The amount of smoke was proportional to the time the car sat. Overnight only produced a little. Sitting 24 hours produced more. We let it set for just about 72 hours and it produced a James Bond smoke screen.

A turbo should not leak oil in to the compressor housing, so any amount of smoke indicates a problem. Oil in the intake will take its toll on the engine. You'll end up with accelerated carbon buildup on the intake valves as the oil coats them and burns up during operation. It's worth noting that carbon buildup is already an issue with direct injected engines. This will make it worse.

Mine is headed in for oil line as my SA says BMW requires them to try the fix first before replacing turbo.

Heh. Sounds familiar. Fortunately, the SAs seem to know the drill. Mine confided in me that he'd seen a number of turbos replaced, but that the PUMA cases are all coming back with the "replace the oil line" fix as required prior to turbo replacement. I kind of get it. The turbocharger replacement isn't a cheap fix.

Not sure what your situation is, but our closest service center is 40 minutes away. I really wish our dealer had verified the fix properly before having us pick up the car. They have to drive it to temperature, then let it sit for 24 hours. Then they need to send two people out to verify the fix. One to start it, and the other to watch the exhaust. Otherwise, they'll miss it, and you'll be stuck having to bring the car back in. I'd recommend taking video as well. My SA also told me that the video evidence really motivates the service managers. BMW don't like customers posting this kind of thing online.

Good luck!

Yep my SA just told me they would keep the car overnight after oil line is replaced to see if it fixes the issue. My dealer is about 30 minutes away so I understand.

Well my service advisor just called and said the new oil line did the trick. Funny though the video he sent was taken in the shadow and looks like smoke coming out to me. Oh well, if it happens again I'll just have to take it back.

They did the same exact thing to me. So frustrating. If you can, let the car sit for 24 hours and have someone video the startup.

Sorry, I don't really have any way to answer this question in a way that has any credibility.

Ask, they might. Its out of warranty but it seems to be a known defect.

My wife inquired at the last service visit (about three weeks ago). They acted like they had no idea what she was talking about... "What turbo problem? "

I'd take the SIB info in there and show them.

Heh. It's the same dealer that fixed the problem under the SIB. I get a different response from them every time we go in. Sometimes they'll admit that they've seen a lot. Other times they clam up like someone has told them to keep their mouths shut about the problem.

IMO, while there's a service bulletin, I don't think BMW are ready to be on the hook for an extended warranty situation like with the HPFP on the N54.
