INJEN Intake DIY install supplement guide for 328i F30

This is not a detailed DIY but more of a supplement to the two-sided instruction sheet. It is to show you the issues I encountered and my take on the install process also my impression of the product and its performance.

This is also my first DIY so bare with me if there are things that are confusing. It really works better when you have the product already. My DIY skills are average so I think anyone who can understand basic instructions will be fine. Also this is meant as a supplement to help the forum members so don't held me liable for any issues you have in your life.

So last evening I received my Injen Intake purchased from VR-Speed Factory and was dropped ship from Injen Manufacturer.

Contents: As usual, INJEN produces a very good quality product. I say good and not great because I had some minor issues regarding fitment and its paint quality. But I say they are minor issues that can be easily overlook. Plus this product really looks great in our cars.

So make sure you disconnect the batteries negative terminal for safety before then just basically follow the instructions and read it thoroughly so you don't miss anything.

Before pulling out the stock intake box. Unpug the MAF sensor by unscrewing two torx screws (No 20), loosening two clamps to release the plastic tubes and unplugging the vacuum line from the box.

(vacuum line located behind the airbox, this is after I pulled out the box because you can't really see it until you do so)

After you've loosen and remove all the items you can actually remove the stock airbox by pulling upwards in a cautious and firm manner.
(this is how it looks like without the stock airbox)

Don't forget to remove a couple of the factory grommets as you will need them later.

At this point you should be attaching the lower intake pipe and 3.25 rubber hose and placing the rubber trim around the hole of the lower shield and attaching both supplied grommets and factory grommets as per instruction.
Tip 1 You are suppose to have a couple of clamps. One to tighten the rubber hose to the lower pipe and the other to attach the upper pipe after installing the lower shield. Make sure this clamp's screw is facing in such a way that it is easier for you to reach while the lower shield is on top.

Only issue So, when I got to figure 12 (installing the lower shield) mine was not aligning properly as what is shown in the instructions so I had to bend this metal part (pictured) to line it up causing a bit of paint to flake. Also be careful when you bend as my weld started to come apart a bit and I had to use a plastic mallet to correct it. Even the hole where the OE grommet is attach was bent 90º and I had to straighten it up.

Tip 2 As you move on to install upper intake, keep the attachment points loose so you can still make adjustments as you position the pipe properly.

Tip 3 I had to tuck in the rubber trim around the rubber connecting pipe to clear the upper pipe to the rubber hose and attach it properly to make sure there is no gap in between. Very important to insure there no leaks.

So you should almost be done. At this time all you have to do is attach the paper cone, reattach the vacuum hose and the MAF sensor. Tip, release this metal clip and reposition it where you have enough slack for the MAF wire to move around.

Tip 4 Make sure you double check your connections and tighten up the brackets prior to placing the upper shield. After that double check again then when sure reattach the negative terminal and test it out!

Impressions I notice how close and direct the cone is where the airflow is. I think it is really a great design and superior to the stock air box.

As I listen to the sound of the air breathing I can't help but smile. Did it produce more power? I don't know.. I have not even really push the car prior to but I believe the manufacturers dyne results and what my butt indicates. Even inside the cabin you can hear this thing breathe and made my drive feel livelier. My 328i got better.

Glad you're happy with your intake.

Answer to your question is no, the intake does not increase power or torque.

Your car breathes the same way with stock or with mod intake. It just sounds different to stock. That's all intakes ever do. Hopefully better to your ears.

Enjoy.

^^ I don't really care if it does add more power or not. I'm happy with what the 328i gives on its own and I'm happier with the results I experienced after and that's coming from previous M3, C63, etc... owner. But I'm also more incline to believe the manufacturer who showed dyno results versus forum members who just says thing without any data. I'm not a bit saying you're one of those cause I don't know you.

Anyway I'll post more pictures later after I get some sleep.. Just getting off night shift.

Here are more images after the install.

No upper shield:

MAF wire route

Vacuum hose and bracket

This part of the shield was bent 90º and I could not figure out why because I can't get the OEM grommet through it so it made more sense to straighten it out.

With Cover

...and the part it replaced!

I'm sure you've heard of Burger Motorsport, home of the JB tuning piggyback kits for BMWs. Well, Terry is the owner & developer and if anyone can squeeze extra power & torque out of an F30, Terry is the one.

Alas, intakes are not an area, which anyone can extract additional power & torque.

Again, enjoy your intake.

^^ Yes I'm familiar with there work and it's all good. But you have to realize the forums besides of its abundance of benefits is also a marketing arena for manufacturers and you have to take things with a grain of salt and ultimately make a decision for yourself. Like i said I'm very satisfied with upgrades I pick and I'm just contributing to other forum members who plan to get this intake nothing more.

Actually, I had gains with my intake on JB4... Let me get back to my dyno if they still had my files... Not a lot, about 2 - 5 hp, but u can see the lower rpm is worst off a bit, but the higher end past 5k is way way better....

Oh, I'm on gruppem, probably something that wasn't part of the tested products?

Very nice write up Izzy! I've always been disappointed with the sound coming from the engine bay. Any more words on how it sound from inside the cabin? and/or with windows down? I really like the look of the engine bay with it in there. Very nice!

^^ I've been driving with it for quite some time now and I am very satisfied with the result. The car responds well to it - no codes whatsoever. Inside the cabin you can hear sweet hissing sounds coming from the right side throughout the rpm range. I can only hear it when my windows are up and my music is off, nothing intrusive.

As far as warranty being voided I believe the consensus is it depends on every individual's issue and the dealer your are dealing with. If it's a major thing I'll probably take time to temporarily return the stock one just to avoid the hassle. It's really an easy install after you figure it out.

I can chime in on this...very i guess airy sound..the turbo sounds awesome...similar to a BOV however not the ricey bird chirp tone. Its a nice hiss at throttle application and release.

How can you find this on the Injen website? Every time I try to look it up, all I get is the setup for the 335i. Thanks for the help. Izzy, GREAT instructions!!

Hey IzzyM3, are you still enjoying the intake? Any issues arise for you since installing?

I'm getting mine installed this week so just wanted an update if you had anything else new to add from when you first got it.

Can't wait to get this done
