May I also get the links to updates on Europe? Do I need FSC code registered to my VIN?

Yes, you need VIN & Map version specific FSC Code.

Installed 2017-1 NA maps today. Never asked for an FSC code. Car is a November 2015 build 535.

I let car sit for 15 minutes and restarted it (getting startup logo) and still works with no FSC code. I confirmed 2017-1 is loaded in About screen.

Unusual? I have heard of a few users in past saying they were able to load with no FSC code but after a restart of car it asked for FSC...

Not common bot not unheard off. Keep FSC Code handy. It may still ask for it at later time.

How do you keep IDrive from shutting down while the updates are going on? With CIC they are so slow it goes to sleep.

It is a 40 Minute install. Run the Motor or you will drain the battery.
