DIY - Blackvue Dashcam Hardwire - ALL with the fusebox, no sketchy wiring

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on the forum about how to hardwire a dash cam. Lots of arguing over which fuses to use, some people saying you can't use fuses and you must tap the battery, etc, etc.

The truth of the matter is that you CAN use all fuses, no need to ghetto tap the battery directly or anything like that.

I'm using a Blackvue DR650GW-2CH with a MotoPark Multi Safer for constant power and timed shutdown. Notice I AM NOT using a PowerMagic Pro, the MultiSafer is much better.

First thing you'll want to do is mount the camera! Here is the location I went with:

It's not visible from the drivers seat, which is very convenient:

This part only applies to coupes:

Running the wires was easy, you tuck the wires first into the mirror cover, then into the headliner, from there you go into the A pillar, and then into the suede cover that runs across the top of the window. Next is around the B pillar and down into the space between the rear coupe window and the vinyl. After this I went up the C pillar to get to wire to the third break light cover, and behind the seat belt assembly to get down to the trunk. I'll take some better pics but realistically its very easy when you get in the car and look at it.

The cables can be tucked more, this is just to help you get an idea.

Now for the part you really needed info on, wiring. This too is very simple.

For the BATT+ you'll use an add a fuse on fuse #161.
For ACC+ you'll use an add a fuse on fuse #143
For ground you'll just attach to the bolt on the car's 3G connection receiver.

My MultiSafer is set to shut down if the battery reaches 12.2v or after 6 hours of recording. There are plenty of other options that you can choose based on what you're trying to get out of the camera. For me, I don't need it to run all night and record the car in my driveway, I really am more concerned with security while the car is parked in parking lots for a few hours.

As you can see I used a good amount of elec tape to make things clean, I also used some double sided foam tape to hold down the cig lighter connector.

With this setup I have had no issues thus far and the whole thing looks very clean.

The tape does bother me a little bit (doesn't really look perfect), so I might replace that with some black double sided 3m tape, since the Blackvue included tape is see-thru.

I'll be sure to update this thread with driving video shortly.

Nice write up. How long are the cameras expected to last? and what is your feedback on the quality?

Thanks! I would hope they last at least the duration of my lease lol. The video quality is pretty damn impressive.

any update or sample vid? I like this setup. I put a Rexing V1 in my Golf R and the wife now wants a cam for her 328i MSport.

I've had two of the DR500GW cameras for a little over three years now. Needed to replace one microSD card only in that time.

This is when they were in the X1 35i

Sorry for the newbie question - but do people notice difficulty starting the car if the Blackvue is powered on to the point where it detects 12v (and shuts off)?
I have had issues in the past with cold weather and difficult starts, and just wanted to know if anyone notices any issues like this. thx!

Even though New York seems to not be entering Winter for some reason (which is okay with me) I will let you know when it does.

I doubt there will be issues. Long cranks can sometimes be excepted regardless if it is really really cold out (at least I think so).

this is not a good idea, is too far and messy too,

i just bought original bmw socket and diy make a wiring hardness (add a fuse for safety purpose) grab power supply from the rain sensor.

simple and easy, 5 minute done.

DR650GW-2CH

Thanks for the info on your setup smithf32.
I have a Blackvue DR650GW-2CH as well, and love it.

I am using the PowerMagic Pro though, so far with no issues.
Usually have park mode set to 12 hours, and voltage to 12V.

Does hooking into the rain sensor allow you to power it while the car is off?

Hi,

Thanks so much for your writeup. It came just in time for me to install my Thinkware F750 front/rear cam. Hopefully it's not too different than the Blackvue install.

I have a question on the fuses you used:
For the BATT+ you'll use an add a fuse on fuse #161.
For ACC+ you'll use an add a fuse on fuse #143

Before I purchase an add-a-fuse, is there a specific ampage that I need to get? Amazon has :

http://www.amazon.com/Support-circui...K4RFV3QHB3K71R

Can I use this to tap into those fuses? What amp fuses do I need to get for those?

Thanks

I'll check when I'm home in 2 days but I'm fairly confident a 5v will be fine.

I don't really use Start/Stop (ASS) but the few times I have I've had no issues.

Do these blackvue cameras have a plug and play option where I can just use the cigarette lighter under the passenger side of the dash?

You can, but it will only record when you're driving, not when parked.

Lol you're such a genius aren't you with that crappy dash cam? Not recording while you're parked obviously.

I have the think ware F750 2 channel installed in mine and used these instructions to install it.

It doesn't require a multi safer since the cameral automatically shuts down once the battery reaches a certain voltage.

The one thing that is somewhat annoying is that the car gives me a warning every time i start it saying "Increased Battery Discharge".

Does anyone else get this warning? Any way to disable it?

Thanks

What voltage did you select? Sounds like the cameras built in circuit isn't doing its job, perhaps add a multisafer to the equation?
