Resetting the Month Maintenance

I apologize up front if this issue has been resolved before but I couldn’t find it with the “search” function.

My 2016 435i coupe doesn’t have a lot of miles and recently went out of its 4-year free maintenance period. When I went in to get my VA vehicle inspection at the BMW dealer last month (it’s free for life), they wanted to know if I wanted an oil change (not free) because the car is stating it’s due for the oil change (last one done was Apr 2019). It turns out I only put about 4,200 miles on the car in the past year so I declined getting it changed.

Here’s my question: I’ve seen videos on how to reset the maintenance reminder for BMWs but can you just reset it for the month? Every time I start the car I see the reminder stating that my maintenance was due in Apr 2019, but I really don’t want or need to change the oil now. Can I adjust the month that the car is telling me maintenance is due or is it just a complete reset of everything?

Also while I’ve had a great relationship with the dealership, it amazes me how they’ll recommend way more maintenance items than what is listed in the owner's manual. I know...$$$!

Thanks in advance for the help!

I can't say if you can just reset the month, mine always goes a full year. I will say that you should change your oil even at 4200 miles, because the interval is 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. I just changed mine after 3800 miles and it looked nasty after driving short distances in winter, which causes crap to build up in the crankcase. I wouldn't have the dealer do it, unless they do so for $80 or less. Don't go to a lube place either. It's time for you to start a relationship with a well reviewed Indy that specializes in German cars.

Technically the oil change intervals are based on time OR mileage. IMO, you should just change the oil every year regardless of how much you drive, especially if its about 5k miles. Not sure if your car is stock, but if tuned, you should be changing oil every 5k anyways. Even on a completely stock car, you should just change the oil every year; its a small price to pay for a healthy engine.

Yes, modern synthetic oils are quite good, but just my 2c.

Sorry a little off topic, back to the question, i dont think you can reset the month without resetting the mileage as well (basically all or nothing reset from what i have seen).

Thanks for the info and I’ll definitely get it changed.

FYI, it’s not tuned and when I drive it it’s about 25 mile drive (one-way) to work, mostly on the highway.

Thanks again for the info!

As stated above, find a good indy for German cars. There are even some that specialize in only BMW. Just don’t take your car to Wreck Boys or Gypsy Lube. When I worked at a dealership many moons ago, we saw our fair share of cars that were ruined by those places.
