Generic tires

I’m needing tires for my new 19” Apex wheels and would like opinions. I have ran mid to upper level tires in the past- Hankook, Falken, Continental, Nitto, etc. I have also ran “generic” tires such as Achilles, Accelera, etc. and have a hard time justifying the huge difference in cost with the minor differences in performance (for me anyway). Keep in mind this is for a daily driver with the occasional canyon run. My car will never see an auto cross track.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some generic tires I wouldn’t touch as it’s not worth my safety. The mentioned brands above I have never had issues with.

What’s your guys opinions on running generic tires for a daily driver?

The question is why to consider that. Personally, I do not understand anybody, who spends big bucks on the car (and the wheels) and saving the money on the tires. The same goes for all-season tires, but that's a different story.

Even worse, the initial cost has very little to do with the cost-per-mile and the cost/wear should be the correct criteria to look for (when not looking for the best tire regardless of price). Usually, the best performing road tires produced by Michelin/Goodyear/Continental are also the ones constantly getting the highest marks in terms of wear.

See this example from reputable ADAC testing: https://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Articl...-Tyre-Test.htm

Beyond grip issues, I wouldn't trust the no-name tire build quality. I'd always be afraid of the belts de-laminating and coming apart or sidewall bubbles forming more easily. There is more to a quality tire than the rubber compound and the grip.

If you don't want to go with Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, etc, than I'd at least go with Kuhmo, Falken, Toyo, General, Firestone, and those in that price "tier". They may not perform like the more expensive tire, but you should at least get quality made tire.

I always look at it this way: those four tires have a small contact patch. The contact patch is the only thing keeping your car on the road and in your control. Make sure it is a good one. I fully appreciate not needing the highest performance level or not wanting/being able to spend the money for top-dollar tires, but don't go with the bottom shelf no-name stuff either.

EDIT: Good point on the wear rate too. The Michelin's and Continentals I've had in the past, regardless of category, did last a long time.

If you need affordable tires, consider one of the following.

Falken
Nexen
General
Firestone
Hankook - this also getting expensive (they are doing collaboration development with European Car Makers)

Research is your ally. Some unknown brand could be just a one off tire made by a well known company like Bridgestone for a Tire chain.

I’ve always had good luck with federals, I like my ST-1s on my f30 now. Deep tread, Good dry grip, wet grip is ok. From the reviews I’ve seen the Firestone is the best all around. I don’t think there are side by side comparisons between those two but I might try the Firestone’s next.

I have Achilles desert hawk a/s on my SHO and it’s been great year round for 3 years, even through some bad Midwest winters

Sumitomo... probably one of THE cheapest tires with amazing grip and quality.
For 19s... Hankook has some pretty good pricing.

But FWIW, TireRack doesn't carry junk tires. So if a major retailer will carry them, even if it's an unfamiliar brand... and they offer road-hazzard for free... it's not a major leap.

I have Nankang NS-25 on my egolf and they are great tires. Reasonably grippy and quiet (both needed on an electric car) and very well made.

I wouldn't take them to the track, but I wouldn't be worried about them for spirited daily use.

Super cheap also.

What size are you looking at getting? I found that will make a big difference in what options are available.

Which model, I didn’t like the base 595 super steel. Just a noisy burner tire. I really liked the 595 rsr though

Never had the double R. There are two rsr and rsrr. I had rsr, they gripped amazing. They didn’t seem loud but to be fair that was in an LS400, which is a quiet cabin. The super steel wasn’t great at anything but sliding around and being cheap to replace.

I did have the 595evo too and I liked those.

I ran the Falken FK510 before, amazing tires! Great performance in all categories (Check tire rack), also loved the design and tread pattern. Everything lined up perfectly with me with that tire.

Also yes, the RS-RR are very loud, I owned them before. You'd almost think all your wheel bearings were shot

RS-RR is a pretty aggressive tire for street. That's an r-comp tire that most consider for track work. It'll have a ton of tread growl and take some time to come up to temp.

The RR is a different type of tire from the RSR. IIRC, that one is an aggressive street tire but not a full r-comp 200tw tire.

I figured I’d give them a try. If they’re shit tires, I’ll switch to something else. I don’t think it’ll take long for those tires to stick with our hot So Cal temps..

If you are talking about the 595 RSRR, just be careful in the rain; wet grip is not great.

I have heard that. So Cal gets minimal rain throughout the year, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Good looking..
