Yup... if someone can't see a car at night or even during the day they should not be driving IMO

I believe it's a US federal regulation that car manufacturers have side reflectors. Probably similar to various UK MOT regulations.

What does the optional parking assistant have to with some unsightly reflector, that's mandated in only one country in the entire world? Only the US government, in 1968 had the foresight to see their effectiveness, yet everyone else said F-it?

If you believe they have some mythical powers that would somehow save you in a collision because someone said so a long time ago, then more power to you but they make very little difference in visibility and like I said, it's not the end of the world if you conceal them.

I'm all for safety, so If you can find some factual evidence, other than the government say it's so, that state they make a difference, then I'm all ears but until then, some silly reflectors are merely holdovers from vehicle's of the past.

Post #46. Poster says America has gone soft. The picture shown shows the parking assistance sensor. We can’t even park our cars anymore.
I’m all for being seen. Taping over reflectors can’t help. Besides it being illegal.

Oh...

I wouldn't say gone soft, maybe some just appreciate supplement assistant features of modern technology, so incidents like these can be prevented:

Progress is never a bad thing but we can also be logical in that decision making.

Sensors might be "ok")
A lady that was parallel parking next to my brand new car repeatedly hit my bumper and the bumper of the car on the other side.
I asked if she is parking "by ear" She stated: "its ok, I am just hitting the bumper! Thats why it's called a bumper, right?!?"...the police officer that showed up right when you need him and the insurance carriers disagreed with that statement...
I guess in the 60-70s, such "bumps " would not have been a big deal but the plastic painted bumpers changed all of that.
No wonder these and the likes became so popular in urban settings:

What a crap! I can't believe that. Maybe, when she drive during crowded rush our "bumper to bumper" she would really go crashing the car in front of her, just to make bumper to bumper

Exact reason why retrofitting backup camera was my first mod! In the past you were able to see through the back window waaaaaay better. Greenhouse in general was much larger. Roof strength regulations changed that so the cameras became a necessity.

That is not a sensor, it's a camera bro... and it's not for parking, it's to see around corners when pulling out of a blind corner for example..

Are you suddenly going to get sideswiped every night you don't have reflectors? No, but it's is saferER with them on. I don't think they look that bad at least not bad enough to put any time, effort or thought into removing them. That's just me. I happen to like how they look actually.

Me neither, it's not that serious..

However, if a shop and already going to paint my bumper and they agree to throw in painting the front reflector for free, then why not..

Because it’s illegal,it’s unsafe. I’m surprised the body shop would do it.
