I can't believe they're so rare, I looked at replacing the mile muncher with another one but there was like three in the entire country. When the finance is up (end of the year) I'll replace it with a G20 330i probably. I adore diesel engines but times are changing..
I think that's the twin turbo version of the 20d... Right...?

Yeah, bigger injectors / twin turbo.

Obviously the 335d had a bit more torque low down but other than that the B58's a far nicer engine to sit behind IMO; early days for me on fuel economy but the petrol doesn't even seem to be much worse than the diesel on that score either.
I certainly did not feel my 340i was significantly disadvantaged over the 330d on fuel costs (when taking into account that unleaded is cheaper than diesel) except maybe if I had a significant period of driving in urban areas... On quiet motorway hauls at steady cruise, I was always amazed what you could get from the 340... and the GTI, well, if you are happy at speed limit cruising, you can get 50mpg on a run down the M1...

I would tend to agree with you here... some of the SUV's I have had in the USA are mind bogglingly poor on gas mileage... Once you start upping the size of vehicle and weight etc etc....

My 340 was, what, 1760 odd kg... once you are in something north of 2 tonnes unladen, then you are seriously going to notice the impact on fuel consumption...

I imagine that would be a fun engine to have in, say, a 1 series... I always reckoned that the 125's were a better proposition than the old 140's... especially where a 140 was going above the £40k price band...

I’m bucking the trend and have decided kit over engine this time around.

This thread sowed the seed, it was JustChris comment about putting the performance gauges on screen and realising how little time I spend using the power of the 40i. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of the 3.0d engine but compromises have to be made somewhere so... G21 320d incoming

Time will tell but I think I’ve bought at a good price so if it’s not for me at least I’ve tried

Just done a similar exercise myself... Looked at an M135i, just put same spec onto a 120d M Sport to see what the difference is...

I think if they did a 125i at about 250 hp I would be very interested...

I picked up the M140i for about 25K brand new, the 125d was around 34(ish)?! So there's one potential issue, price..

As a DD the 125d is probably one of the best cars I've owned, on a track however that M140i AT is fricking hilarious. You'd be sideways at 70MPH on a straight because of all the POWERZ.! Better as a B road / weekend / track car than a DD though.

For all my whining the only BMW I've driven which I truly disliked was a loaner 318d manual with standard brakes / suspension etc. The rest (125D M-Sport, M140, 335D, X3, 340i, G20 M340i, G20 330i M-Sport, 430i M-Sport GC, M3) have been excellent even if I preferred some over the others, you really notice when you start test driving other cars. It's just occurred to me, besides an old M5 I've never driven a 5 series..

125d is pretty quick I only just managed to beat one in my 330d on a long dual carriageway, it had a pretty decent turn of speed!

I used my Z4 coupe yesterday to go into London, with my 320d ED Touring now commanding £27.50 to drive in, I calculated that at 52mpg for the 320d vs 28mpg for the Z4 3.0si, the Z4 would actually be cheaper.

I have never really bothered resetting the MPG on a run, but yesterday I did.
The trip from Norwich to Islington and back again returned 38.1mpg.

That is seriously impressive as far as I am concerned.

As I said, the 320d ED would do 52mpg on that run, so actually not all that much in it. Then when you consider the 320d commands an additional £12.50 to drive in, it worked out cheaper.

By the way, my e91 lci always returned 48mpg on that journey, I would have taken that, but it sold the night before.
