Help Needed

Ladies, Gents & non binary good folk of Bimmerpost.

I've started to become obsessed with an absolute munter of a car. I know all of its limitations but absolutely love it.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Probably going to be changing the X2 in the next 6 months as its top of the list for family car duty. All feedback welcome. As I see it:-

PROS
1) Nothing looks this good
2) We all enjoy the MX5 open top but only 2 at a time. There are some excellent open top options. Likely would go for the one touch power roof.
3) Big news. Family might be expanding. Potential dog ownership on the way. This car is rough and ready and plenty of space for that, there is a dog con, see later
4) Highly modifiable, I'd love tinkering with this.
5) Seems like a cult car and parts and groups readily available
6) Is it just me or is the weather getting wetter and wetter and wetter? We were in Southport a few back last time it rained. The main road on the seafront was flooded and I seriously worried my lowered 135i was about to flood. Hmmm
7) Rugged so I won't be bothered about trail running, football etc and just getting on with it.
8) - 100) ETTO but I've always loved the looks. Both times in Florida we hired one and got along fine, this was last gen JK.

CONS
1) There are many! Top of the list on road manners. Steering is supposed to be super vague.
2) Ladder Frame chassis and Ruby is overkill but o can't get past the rigged look. Must be that model.
3) Ride height is probably an issue for dog access. Ramp or picking the pup up needed
4) Dealership. Chester Fiat/Jeep/Alfa have gone so now it's Knutsford for me. Not impressed so far with Mangoletski. It seems hard to buy a car there!
5) Price. Maybe a pro actually. It's expensive in the spec I like but offers are very strong, £1500 down and £499 month last Qtr and 12 months job loss protection is a nice add on.

Sorry for the ramble, I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has a friend with the current JL or some horror stories.

Only really looking at the 2.0L Turbo petrol, not a huge engine range, the new 4xe PHEV might be interesting, awaiting news on U.K. pricing.

Cheers

It’s funny isn’t it,that thing called character. We had two Jeeps, wasn’t a great car to drive at all but the Mrs loved it and I got it. Sometimes it’s not about the best car but the one that appeals.

Mind you our second one didn’t last long as the build quality was truly appalling on second one!

As with all things,if it works for you, your family and part of your fleet then do it. You will probably only have it 6 months anyway

ETA not sure what sort of dog you are thinking about but if it is big enough to need to go in the boot, it will be big enough to get in!

No experience of Jeeps. Some experience of cars with a little character winning you over. Perhaps some 10/10s and some 5/10s is better than 7 and 8s in every category?

Love the Rubicon. Get it bought. I might even be tempted to follow you across a field and see how we get on. Perhaps in a loaner if I can wait for mine to break down

Cheers both. Just applying some man maths too, the equity in the X2 easily covers the deposit too, forgot that Mrs just pointed it out.

I always find that when the Mrs joins in the man maths it’s a done deal

I've a friend who has one, very customised by Twisted (I think it was them). It looks very very cool.
However from the few passenger rides I've had in it I thought it was appalling as a road car. The ride was atrocious, and the noise (wind, road, everything) was very unrelaxing.
It kind of sounds good engine wise but it's got no performance, yet still struggles to get on the right side of 20mpg.
He loves it, but he's a unique individual with quite eclectic tastes.
I think it would last a month if you got one.
How about the new defender?

Drove one in Colorado. Hated it.

Noisy, vague, thirsty, yes you can take doors off and everything but it feels so...unfinished.

The tech in the one I drove didn't even know what bluetooth was. And this was only a year or two ago.

Of course different specs around, but if I was going to have one it would definitely be a lease. And even then, only if I had to.

I had a Jeep last time we were in Florida.

Do not do it.

It's one thing having it for a couple of weeks on holiday in the sunshine, everybody in holiday mode etc. but it's a terrible car and you'd soon realise it driving it here.

I wonder how many miles Mrs just chris will do in it and whether she will really care about any of those things if it is making her and the kids smile? Besides Chris will have at least one other car option when those things matter...

Defender? Not sure they have real character, just a bit of a retro look on a modern car... and bloody expensive!

Sometimes there's a fine line between character and flaws, but not in this case. The Jeep is a product of its environment, the big old US of A with all its wide open wilderness spaces, rugged outdoor lifestyles, or sunny and dry weather.
Not Cheshire.
The novelty factor will wear off after about 3 days.

Agreed, the only person I know that’s had one got rid of it as soon as they could. She only pottered around locally in it, but still hated it’s zero refinement and intrusive noise.

I didn't ever get around to posting on here at the time. Yes it arrived late July. With apologies to Chris for a thread derail, here it is and also alongside the old one

I hired one when in Florida earlier this year and as others have said it was great for a few days but I really wouldn't want to live with one here. It's like a full size tonka toy but not built as well. Although saying that, they do look good so if you fancy it just go for it. I think I'd still want something more refined even if it's a workhorse.

I fear that may be your issue

Whilst the X2 has equity, can you be certain that the Jeep will at any point in its life?

Edit: I realise that this POV may be rather sensible for this forum......

Yes. So far. To be fair to the old one it was faultless after the errant sensor was replaced.

Oh good grief, I almost like that. Not good when new car time is creeping up, albeit slowly.

Hmm feedback as expected really. The BC Goodrich off-road tyres that come with the Rubicon are legendary for being noisy too.

Test drive not possible in the foreseeable too as Flintshire is locked m.

Cheers all.

Oh yes and PS the Defender is on the radar but I don't know, been to see the 110 (only one you can see till October) and it is MASSIVE. Ridiculously long at >5m and very high. So the 90 appeals but the 2 door access is a drawback and it's a bit small really.

Plus yea the prices

Is the Broncho coming here at all? Not the scouser, the Ford.

Sadly not it seems, quite surprised. I do like the look of it. Reviews are all very favourable.

PS the car is a Bronco.
