3 GT height comparison next to X5 and 6-series

In case anyone is interested, before I picked up my 3GT at the dealer, I took a snap shot while it was sandwiched between what looks to be an X5 and a 6-Series and you can see in the photo the difference in height. I actually thought the 3GT would be a little taller. I'm coming from an X3 so it feels just right as far as seating position and overall height, but it’s definitely taller than a regular 3-Series

If somebody finds them useful, these are some other comparison pictures I found on the internet:

Here you see the entire 3 series line : sedan, GT, Touring, X3:

And here you see the GT next to 4 series line. (From left to right: 4GC, 3GT, X4)

That last shot shows up the differences very well.
Thanks,

Thanks,
+1. I have a bad back, and getting in and out of a 4 would put me in traction. It's nice to look at, but impractical. OTOH the X4 is way too high, is not as spacious as the GT and doesn't drive as well either. The GT is just right.

I totally agree with Billfitz. While I'm not a huge fan of the BMW 3GT looks and like the BMW 4 GC (and the normal 4) much better, I still choose the BMW 3GT, simply for practicality reasons. The space inside a 3 GT is simply amazing. I'm even wondering, why somebody would even upgrade from a 3 GT to a 5 series :s

I'm still waiting for my order to arive. Aprox 100 days left

Whilst I don't have a bad back (touch wood), I totally agree with your comments about getting in and out of a 4. I was starting to feel it a bit getting in and out of my previous BMW, an E92 325i. Getting in and out of my F34 is so much easier.
It's just an age thing !

I am amazed at how "big" the X4 looks next to the GT. Haven't seen one in person yet. But I'm taking my GT in for its first service in a couple of weeks, hope to see one then. The car magazine reviews on this side of the pond have not been very favorable at all. I thought this review at thetruthaboutcars.com was very good because the reviewer compared the X4 to what he thought was its closest competitor, the 3GT, and felt the GT was a better car:

I've been on the road next to an X6, and compared to the GT it's a behemoth. I don't get the X4/X6. But I don't get SUVs in general. If I needed the space that most have fine, but there's no need for them to sit 6 to 8 inches taller than the GT. With the X4/X6 you get the massive height, but you don't get the cargo space that makes an SUV useful.
I came close to going with the new Nissan Murano, but couldn't get past the 30 inch diameter truck tires, four inches of wheel well reveal, and six inches of overall height that serves no purpose. And the GT still has more rear legroom.

Interesting comparison shot. How are you enjoying the GT, and that's Sudbury isn't it?

I love the GT. just hit 1800 miles and I'm starting to open it up now in sport and sport plus mode. And yes that is Sudbury where I got the car.

Moved from 5GT to 3GT

I got my new 335d GT M Sport in April which replaced my 535d GT M Sport (2012) - so just picking up on the question of whether you'd bother considering the 5 GT now...

I can confirm that it has the same (if not slightly more) space in the boot. I'm finding that loads where I would have had to move the seats forward in the 5GT fit in just fine. My teenage sons both reckon they have similar legroom and all that in a car that is a foot shorter! Really is impressive.

The only downside compared with the 5 is the rear is not quite as comfortable (rear bench seat rather than more sculpted seats, no 4 zone climate control and less headroom). You'd probably need to watch the rear headroom if you went for the sunroof - the 5 had this as standard and still had lots of room - but the 3 GT is definitely more compromised if you are transporting above average height people - so I didn't tick the sunroof box.

In my view there is no real difference in the front comfort-wise when compared to the 5 GT.

I was quite happy with the handling of the 5GT (it was never going to compare with the 335d saloon I had before) and the 35d gave it the necessary power but in 3GT guise with slightly re-worked engine plus 8 speed and much less weight the performance is great - can vouch for 0-62 in 4.9 secs and I'm getting over 40mpg (UK) - I was getting 35mpg in the 5GT. The xDrive will be a bonus too as I can't get out of my road on summer tyres if there is a dusting of snow.

On the looks front my 5GT was in Carbon Black with 20" wheels so I only ever noticed approving looks but the 3 looks much better (in Estoril Blue/19" wheels)...

So I'm really pleased with the change - no regrets at all...
