The tax begins with the second purchased tax - not in the second year - If the car was registered in June and bought by me in July I would pay the premium for 5 years from that point - so at the end of 61 months I would revert to the standard road tax without the £310 premium. In my personal case Registered in June Bought by me in December 2017 Taxed by me in December 2017 as tax can no longer be transferred Current Tax therefore will expire at the end of November 2018 In terms of timelines Registered = 0 Months Bought by Me = 6 Months (give or take) Tax Premium starts with my purchase and goes for 5 years (5 x 12 = 60) That brings me to month 66 of car age. So I will stop paying the premium on month 67 onwards (as its 5 years from the date of second tax purchase) |

If you look at my screenshot it clearly shows on the Road Tax status page the 5 years starts with the second tax payment, whenever that may be. The premium charge kicks in the second time its taxed - not on the second year of ownership (unless you have owned the car from new). |

So basically, if you're buying a new car, ti keep for a few years, it will be taxed, but cash the tax in before the end of the first month.
Get a refund of the tax. Your end of premium tax will be brought forward by 11 months. In the example by #speedski , his car is older than mine by 3 months, but my premium period ends 9 months after his. Why didn't this thread start back in August??? |

What does the road tax page say for you?
I rang them to confirm what the deal was before I paid it - confirmed the end date is 5 years from the date of second tax payment - whenever that is. |

Ok, so does it mean that a car is taxed twice in year one ? Or dealer which registered it in the first place gets the tax refunded?

Road Tax can no longer be transferred, any unused portion is refunded. The car could be taxed as many times as needed per year now that its not transferable. |

You won't get a portion of the 'first registration fee' or whatever it's called back, just a portion of the £140 VED. You'll then re-tax the car paying both £140 + £310......No? All you've achieved is speeding up the year 2 to year 6 additional 'luxury car' tax counter. |

I would imagine a portion of both. What about tax refund in year 2, 3 or 4 - portion of £140 or £450?? |

As has been said, you don't get any of the first year registration fee back. I know this for sure as I've done it twice in the last 3 months! IE, return a brand new car that was over £40k list. It's nothing new. We've been getting automatic refunds for the past 4 years when we trade a car in.

you would have to tax the car. tax is non transferable so you would have to pay £450 on collection, the original owner I.e the dealer on a pre reg gets the rebate.

The initial tax when new in April was £830. I rang DVLA and they told me I'll pay £140 on collection. The car is below the 40k threshold. |
