What would double suck is if someone reorders a 335i because of this thread, then, the EPA changes those numbers! Then all of em will be wishing they didn't cancel their 328i's.

So far I'm averaging 5 mpg better than my e90, and on a new engine no less. It may not be quite as much as initially advertised, but for my DC area stop and go commute this mileage is impressive (25-26 mpg after first refuel). Not to mention the on demand torque is fantastic. Suspension complaints aside, the F30 is a real performer so far and the mpg has been an added bonus.

Agreed. I think it is indeed very weird, but still, since BMW themselves actually also revised the numbers, there must be some truth in there? It is also encouraging to know you're getting such a good mileage at least

lol that'd be so terrible. I think I'm holding out for at least a few more days, I have at least until the end of the month so I can always decide my next step

BMW communication and explanation on the matter added to the first post, as follows:

Quote:
All manufacturers are responsible for testing and submitting fuel economy figures each year to the EPA (based on physical tests following the EPA test cycle on a dynamometer). Occasionally, the EPA will validate the figures that we provide. When this happens, there are sometimes small changes in the published EPA fuel economy figures (usually 1 mpg up or down).

The EPA recently tested the 2012 328i Automatic and obtained a highway mileage result that was 3m pg lower (33mpg versus 36mpg) than the BMW test result. We are very surprised by this result and are currently working to determine how this is possible. The new rating seems abnormally low in relation to the other models in the BMW range and by the real-world fuel economy that we are seeing from this model.

Unfortunately, there is no provision in the EPA rules for a re-test this year. Therefore regardless of the results of our investigation, the new rating will stand for this model year.

I think this is fairly normal...early adopters do take on these risks.

In terms of owning the car, however, it depends on who you trust for a more accurate real-world mileage figure, BMW or the EPA. Pros and Cons for both sides as to which to believe. The truth will come out with an additional EPA test and the real-world experiences of people who have bought the car. This is the advantage of waiting it out and seeing where the car is at once it has left the hands of the few testers built to analyze the theoretical data and into the hands of thousands of real owners.

So if I had bought the 328i, it would not change my feeling at all. Wait and see where the real number is....I think most owners would know that this is a possibility when buying a brand new model in its first year of production.

They defiantly screwed that up. They did the same thing with the E60 550i, the EPA says it gets lower mpg than the E66 750Li

The only numbers that are listed on their website are the newly revised 328i. So before I make any decision, I will wait until all the numbers are released.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think BMWUSA.com ever had MPG numbers listed on the spec page. Each time I checked it was "TBD" and I checked quite regularly, each time to check on a different parameter. I'm not sure if you're referring to a different website or if I missed it somehow.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, if I'm not wrong, 335i's gas mileage could be correct as is.

Check out this article.
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...s-dont-add-up/

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a conspiracy going on with the EPA trying to curb sales of imports. Or maybe the EPA put the fattest American (as the Euros like to calls us) behind the 328i. Go USA! REX KWON DO!

And don't worry, I'm not trying to get a kick out of this... but it is kinda funny. After all, I ordered a 335 and I'm sure the EPA dood that test drove it is probably overweight with an even heavier foot as well.. so those results will probably be worse as well. But seriously, I think if you ordered a 328i, be happy with it! Real world figures, on this forum at least, are showing much promise!

Darn..I was hoping to replace my 38mpg 335d.

I hope the active hybrid 3 does 40mpg plus.

You are probably correct. I just looked this evening and found it interesting that only the revised 328i AT numbers were listed. However, looking at the official response to the test from BMW, I do wonder if BMW's numbers were off for the 328i AT, does that mean that all of their F30 numbers are off too? It seems like they are alleging some sort of testing error, either by BMW or the EPA.

Drove 250+ miles in Eco pro mode and average out around 32 - 34 mpg. I've no worry.

Sure, and I think your suspicion is reasonable. Just from a practical stand point, it doesn't make whole lot of sense for those two engines to be equal in their gas mileage numbers.

I know this news may be a little shocking to folks, but let's step back and look at the big picture.

Pre-Revision 328i MPG Estimate:
15,000 miles @ 36 mpg @ $3.99/gallon = $1,666.67

Post-Revision 328i MPG Estimate:
15,000 miles @ 33 mpg @ $3.99/gallon = $1,813.53

So basically, you'd be spending $146.97 more in fuel *IF* this decrease in MPG actually comes to fruition. Does anyone seriously want to change their car order for this small amount of difference?

Let's look at it another way ....

My '08 E92 335xi MPG Reality:
15,000 miles @ 24 mpg @ $3.99/gallon = $2,493.75

Post-Revision 328i MPG Estimate:
15,000 miles @ 33 mpg @ $3.99/gallon = $1,813.53

Annual Fuel Savings = $680.22

That's still a chunk of change, and a lot less than the $5K premium I would pay for a 335i vs. a 328i.

I guess I better stick to my 128. I was thinking of getting a 328, but for 10% improvement( I get 30mpg at 78mph 1 hour highway commute), I'd rather keep what I have and drive it to the ground. I drive 30k miles a year anyhow.

Something is now completely off. The 528i's EPA highway rating is 34; the 328i's is 33. That makes no sense given the weight difference.

I agree. Comparing BMW's numbers to the EPA's is like comparing apples to oranges. I know it sounds crazy because they are supposed to be running the same test, but obviously they have not. Therefore, until the EPA tests the 335i, we will not know what the EPA fuel economy for the 335i is. What we do know is that under BMW's tests, the 328i was more fuel efficient than the 335i. We will just have to wait for more information.
