2013 328i N20 Whining/buzzing noise.
Before I start this is a different noise than the injectors, I know about the direct injector noise.
My mothers 328 is making a whining/buzzing noise. It is very noticeable at low rpm in quiet settings. The entire timing chain assembly was just replaced under warranty and the noise got slightly louder. The warranty is expiring soon, and the dealer says the car is fine. I am worried that something serious could fail when the car is out of warranty. Any ideas what this could be? I will attach a video shortly. EDIT: video below. Thank you in advance. Definitely this is not normal. did you also replace oil pump chain? Oil pump with balance shafts? Other than that potential fault could be crankshaft end bearings.

Any suggestions on how to get the dealer to actually fix this? Its been in twice in the last month, first time was when they replaced timing chain and the chain guides, second was when they said there was no problem. They said they didn't hear anything, but the dealership is in the city with lost of ambient noise so who knows. |

The noise is from the balance shafts/oil pump and as I was told chances your car would develop this noise are 50/50. I had the same noise and replaced the oil pump assembly several months ago. The noise went away but returned in 2000 km. It almost goes away after the oil temperature reaches 80c degrees. After the noise returned I went to the dealership and found that some of new cars also had the same noise. So I do not worry about it anymore. I would still press the dealer to swap the oil pump chain to a new design, that seems to be a much more robust.

Has anyone found the reason for this whining noise in the engine? My F30 N26 from US with the 5500km mileage works in the same way as the F30 shown in the video in second post.

I have the same noise on my 2013 328i w/91k miles, I have a fresh tensioner and belt and the noise is still present.. From what everyone is saying on the forums its the oil pump and 50% of them will develop this noise. They also claim " THIS IS NOT THE CHAIN NOISE " and should cause no harm so hopefully thats true.. Once warm the noise is completely gone and car drives fine.

If you don't mind, I'm gonna throw my video on here. Seems like mine may have bit the dust?

Someone who is a bmw tech mentioned that the oil pump sprocket is notorious for developing the sound, something about the material\shape of it, once it gets worn down it just becomes noisy, does this mean that its going to fail, most likely not, but does it suck for us owners, absolutely. Mine sounds pretty much the same, its been 20k miles since i bought the car and the sound is still there :\ (73k miles on the odo).

Just change your oil regularly ( every 6k or so, not that 10k crap ).

Wow, new timing chain and guide @ less than 35k miles. Now this? The car is practically brand new. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Mine is making the same noise. Like others saying it is the oilpump (not the oilpump chain). I had to rebuild my n20 engine because of another failure. I asked the mechanic to also replace the oilpump for a brand new one because I didn’t like the noise.
When I got the car back the noise was gone but after 2000km its started to slowly come back. It quiets down after the engine is warmed up. Also my BMW dealer said the noise is coming from the oilpump and supposed to be normal. Guess we have to live with it |

I developed the "Oil Pump Whine" around 80k miles but once the oil is warm it goes away. So far the car revs super smooth and makes no other noises other then the wastegate rattle that plagues all turbo BMWs it seems. From the research ive done on this board and youtube etc, You can have the whine and still not get the chain issue, Or replace the chains/guides/pump and have the whine come right back. I have zero metal on metal noises and never found metal shavings in my oil or the filter. I hope with using LiquiMoly Ceratec every 20k and oil changes every 5-6k the car keeps on running... Ive been told there are two separate issues ( the whine and the chain issue ) The whine apparently even has came back for people who replaced their pumps.. I just pray it doesnt get worse as my car is paid off finally and still looks brand new and drives great.

Your whine is different. It has a higher pitch/frequency. I think this is the oil pump chain.

So I recently stumbled on an extra layer of the whine, when the AC is on the whine becomes much more pronounced, particularly at low speeds you can really hear it, anyone else experience this?
