Powder Coating Stock Rims

Hey guys! I'm going to be powder coating my rims pretty soon and I wanted to here y'alls opinion on this price. Also, I'm from the Atlanta area.

Custom Coaters Atlanta- Marietta
Removal of wheels from car
Removal of wheels from tires
Repair of curb rash on all 4 wheels
Sandblasting
Powder coating
Mounting
Balancing
Installation

600-630
600 is if the curb rash is moderate
630 is if the curb rash is really bad

Is this pricing fair?

That sounds fair with the curb rash fix. I was quoted 550 about 2 years ago for 19” G37 wheels in Miami. They are doing a lot of extra work. Most places want you to bring in bare rims,

I second this... and usually have a turn around time of 1 week at best and 2 weeks for some.

That is a steal, never experienced a PC'er that will unmount/mount and balance. I've paid close to that much for just PC and having to do the rest myself

Turn around is 3-4 days.

So... yeah, the pricing is within the realm of fairness. Maybe the ever so slightest touch high, but that's splitting hairs.

Sweet! I actually have the rim warranty from bmw so they will cover the curb rashes. I already use 1 wheel service 3 years ago so only have 3 wheels left. I am not sure if all my wheels have curb rash but I know 2 of them do. Hopefully it's just those 2. And if it is all 4, I'd only have to pay for 1

make sure they don't use excessive heat (or duration of heat). Improper PC process will severely weaken AL.

Oh really? Good to know. This shop specializes in stuff like this. I shouldn't have to worry right?

I would always have concern.

BBS' limit is 200 degrees Celsius and 25 minutes. I think it's common for PC companies to exceed those limits.

I have stock BMW rims. Where can I find those specs for my rims?

It's not published. I would follow BBS' recommendation. Honestly I would not powder coat my wheels. Paint is the safer bet. That being said BBS themselves uses a base powder coat primer for the E88. Plus HRE powder coats their wheels. It can be done. It just needs to be done safely and I don't have a ton of trust in most PC companies. I have seen improperly powder coated wheels literally twist the spokes on corner exit without any impact.

If the powder coating company is a reputable company and they should know how much heat can a wheel material take and for how long.

@slicer you are correct, cant disagree. Here's hoping some of these shops have a certain degree of integrity and understand the consequences of overheating certain metals.

All American Powder Coating (Sacramento) did me right a solid two years ago and haven't had a single issue FWIW.

Thank god I'm not the only one. Powdercoating wheels freaks me out.

Recrystallization temp of aluminum is about 300°F. Meaning it will completely recrystallize the matrix, destroying all grain boundaries (in other words, the thing that forging creates that increases the yield strength of the material) in one hour.

I would be more ok with powdercoating wheels if the shops doing it did a Brinell hardness test before and after to confirm they haven't changed any of the material's yield properties. It's not as big a deal on things that aren't loaded in fatigue, but aluminum doesn't have a fatigue limit. A minor decrease in yield strength on a cyclically loaded part like a wheel can be several orders of magnitude in terms of cycles to failure.

$150 per wheel is about right.

Must ceramic coat the wheels too. $50-75/each using Ceramic Pro 9H (cured under lamps).

Cheers
