2014 F30 N55 Oil Catch Can

Hello everyone,

I have a 2014 335i and I wanted to install a oil catch can. Ive seen the instructions on how to do it, but the only problem is that I've only seen instructions for E chassis and not for F chassis. (apparently nobody makes one?)

The first image is from the instructions and the second is from what my car looks like (Too dark to take a pic of mine). The coolant reservoir is set up differently and I was trying to figure out the best way to go about it.

Has anyone found a good way to mount it and set it up? I have somewhat of a good idea but I'm not too sure about it.

F n55 doesn't really need that, as why you cant find anything about it.

Yea, that's what I've read in some of the forums. The reason I was asking is because when I changed out my chargepipe, there was oil where it connects to the Intercooler. I also checked the pvc hose and there was oil in there as well. I've just been thinking no one has come out with one or haven't figured out how to put one, but then maybe it really doesn't need one.

Everybody has a small amount of blowby in N55's nothing to worry about. The catch can is overkill, and honestly just something else that can/will start leaking or cause issues.

That's true that every car has some blowby, but it adds up over time. My 335 has 30k miles on it and there was a lot of oil that had blown through.

I bought the ADD W1 oil catch can. It was the cheapest one I saw and it's actually pretty good quality.

I saw that Bms has one for n55 but it's for 320/328 f30's E chasis.

I'm going to try and make a mount for it. I have the hoses and connections so I just need to mount it and test it for two weeks maybe three. If it's not needed I can just reconnect everything like normal. I'll post pics once I have it set up.

Would this restrict airflow in any way though?

Where did you get the hoses from? I had to connect 3 different sizes to make mine work.

Just an update. Finally got my occ set up a few days ago. Going to try it out and see what happens. My occ has a breather so I'm going to try it out with and without it. Here are some pics of my set up.

I got the occ from eBay. It wasn't too much. I bought some hoses from siliconehose. I had a friend make a bracket for me but it was a little too big so I used some brackets from Home Depot. Wrapped the hoses with the heat shield tape to make it look good. (had some laying around). No issues or lights. Same amount of power.

Let us know how it holds up over time! I would rather buy a kit for this car but can't beat saving a couple hundred for the same results!

So I just picked up a 2014 335i, and running direct injection in my previous turbo car, I was thinking about installing on my car as well.. Being new to BMW's, why isnt it really needed on the N55 F30?

Great question...

First thing I did was install a BMS can on my 328.

It is my understanding that all DI engines could benefit somewhat from having a catch can. How much of a benefit or whether its "worth it" are up for debate and the specific platform, I guess.

For $200 and an hour of my time, it was a no brainer considering I plan to keep my car for many miles.

On my Mazdaspeed 3 which is also direct injection, I already walnut blasted the valves once to clean up the mess left on the intake valves. From watching videos on cleaning the valves for the 335i I know it suffers from the same problem. I'm just not sure why it's been said that it's a good idea to install on the N54, but not needed on the N55.

Scratching my head here!

This is the question everyone everyone has been awaiting a definitive answer for. I've always understood that any turbocharged engine would benefit from having a catch can somewhere in the system.
