440xi software update
Hello guys, i went today for an oil change at my bmw dealer and they also said they need to update my software. My car was produced in 2018.
They didnt know what this update was about. Do you have any idea what this update is about? Thank you. |

Did the dealer mention something similar to "reprogramming the car"?
This is perfectly normal. My 2017 BMW 440i GC also received full reprogramming after I reported a minor problem with iDrive. Most of the time, when the dealer reprograms the vehicle without any specific problem reported by the customer, the softwares changes are mainly internal improvements, for example better diagnostic logic. Imagine BMW dealer trying to diagnose the root cause for the same problem in two F3x vehicles but two years apart: 2016 and 2018. The 2016 vehicle has older ECU software and functionally different diagnostic logic. It's in BMW best interest to have the same software release in both vehicles: saves time and money on warranty repairs. To the extent permitted by the hardware components, it's simply beneficial to have the same software at any given time. |

Thank you for your answer.
He just said that i have “version 2” and the it needs updated to “version 4”. I asked this because i read on some forums that some were experiencing lose in exhaust sounds etc. And my paranoia activated. |

Does your vehicle have MPSSK? Some forum members reported a change in exhaust sound after a programming update.
BMW directed programming updates are just a fact of life as cars become computers on four wheels. |

Currently there is an official call-back for 40i for a new ECU SW in Germany (most likely everywhere, but I only know for sure about Germany, will soon find out about other European countries).
The verbally communicated reason to those who did it already is introduction of engine protection from high RPMs in neutral/parking position. No formal document is available yet to provide details. Regarding MPPSK - it is true that newer MPPSK softwares "surpress" most of the sound-effects. Mine included (installed 08.2018). The call-back update however doesn't seem to affect anything in that respect. At least based on user experience so far, but insight is still limited. Some users report higher short-term cold-start RPMs (previously 1500, now 1800 rpms). Others say there is no appreciable change to anything.

I don't know. It is literally a week old. I have not yet been called (and haven't asked either). But it seems to be a global recall. No formal information available yet, just the verbally communicated to a number of owners, see above.

No. I drive doesn't show SW info for the control units, only for user-updatable SW and data (e.g. map version, iDrive version)

My friend who works at a dealership sent me the actually pdf for the DME recall going on, not sure if this would help.
"This Service Action involves approximately 30,162 vehicles produced from 7/26/2016 to 11/29/2018." "In the DME control unit software, a function to protect components was incorrectly implemented. This function should protect internal engine components, in case the engine is run at high speed for too long when stationary." I attached the pdf below. This is quite interesting indeed, but the way I read it, it addresses a malfunction of the exhaust flaps in case there is no difference in sound between Comfort and Sport/Sport+
I do however notice difference (not extreme, but some) and I am quite sure they open. I believe however I have been a "victim" of a newer SW version which has reduced the sound effects produced by the engine itself. Others report the same, what I don't get is why some do, some don't, irrespective of date of installation. I will double-check flap operation though. Thanks for the tip!

Interesting !
Funnily enough as long ago as 2003, I remember my 330d MSport that I had, had a function to limit the revs when stationary to no more than 4000. When driving the car you could easily get past 5000 (although not a lot of point in that engine). So I suspect this function has been around for a while, just implemented differently according to the engine . |

got this just this last Monday, SI B12 01 19. It definitely did something to the exhaust flap, before update both Comfort AND Eco Pro mode opens up the flap after warm-up, now it is not. That was the difference between the pre-update 340 and 435IX I had two years ago, now after the update the exhaust flap behavior between drive modes is similar to the 435.

I am not sure what you guys are talking about!
The flap(s) in Comfort are only opened beyond 4000rpm! Never under. In Sport/Sport+ they are open permanently.
