Bootmod3 vs Dinan Stage 1

I just recently hit 30k miles in my 2018 340i xDrive. Im starting to weigh my options for a stage 1 tune and am stuck between Bootmod3 and Dinan’s Dinanflash. I’m not looking to get any crazy numbers as this is my daily. Which tune is easier to install and overall more user friendly? Also are there any supporting mods and or maintenance to be done before/after installing the tune?

Thanks in advance!

bootmod3 is more user-friendly, with more power and a lot more features.

It's not a knock on Dinan tunes, but bootmod3 is the best option for this platform, in my opinion.

Bootmod3
As for maintenance for Stage 1 my tuner reccomended new spark plugs and I think that’s it if I remember correctly. Stage 2 is where you’ll get into downpipes etc. I have MPPSK on my 340 and Stage 1 was much more impressive in my opinion. Coming from MHD on my older cars BM3 is so much easier to use. You’ll enjoy it.

I just recently when MHD and I’m wondering how it can get easier??? I’ve never flash tuned before this and it was super easy and fast. Wifi adapter linked up right away, click a couple options you want and hit flash. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes. Changing options after the initial flash takes all of 2 minutes with the actual flash time showing 8-10 seconds.

First off, +1 for BM3. Have it. Love it.

Second, only other thing to consider is a bench unlock if your DME is locked. The Dinan handheld tuner will unlock your DME if it is locked, whereas with BM3 you will need to find a shop locally that does bench unlocks or mail out your DME to a place that does.

In the end, I did a bench unlock and don't regret it one bit. I was a bit worried bringing my car to the dealership for an oil change (usually do it myself, but running low on time and energy with a newborn and its too cold/wet) that they would try to update the software and relock it, but i just asked the SA not to update anything and I got my car back as is. No notes on my invoice about a downpipe or tune on the car either so all is good!

Long story short, get BM3. It'll be well worth it!

It's not worth swapping now but it is a little nicer overall. Better logging setup as well and you can resell it once if you need to.
Generally speaking and I see people get this wrong all the time but bootmod3 usually makes more power as mhd tends to be a tad more conservative with their ots maps.

another vote for BM3. it's very intuitive, which most people will appreciate. BM3 has a proven great track record for tech support.

like others have said, flashing the car takes 10 mins at most, I'd say closer to 5.

I can only speak from experience with bm3, never used anything else, but it's been great.

So what tuning platform makes more "power"? I was thinking of going BM3, but I have seen that with OTS maps, they tend to make more power than BM3's OTS maps.

I haven't tuned my 340i yet, plan on doing it this month, I want to go e30, but honestly not sure what platform can produce a faster car, if one is better than the other.

BM3 pros: better logging, transferable/resalable license, cloud-based

MHD pros: cheaper upfront, more custom tuners familiar with B58 platform

Most of the pump gas tunes for both are meh and will produce timing corrections. Better to go 1 octane lower map (Ex: for 93 gas, use 91 map. For 91 gas, use ACN map). If you're in California, you're SOL lol with the awful quality fuel.

The ethanol maps for both run pretty good. I always overshoot, E32-E33 or more after logging and adjusting. Be sure to measure the ethanol content in both the regular fuel and E85 at the pump.

Bootmod3 is the way to go.. again unless it's an mhd person who's never used Bootmod3 before, they will tell you the opposite.. but do whatever you want.. nobody really cares that much tbh

Well I plan on doing downpipe and e30 with either platform. I know a hpfp would definitely help with high ethanol levels, but I would trust my ability to calculate how much ethanol to put in the car. I most likely will go with BM3 and do their e30 map, and hope it performs as well, or slightly better than MHD.

You're gonna run into hpfp issues with e30..

How common is that to happen? I know a lot of people who go e30 with just a downpipe on a b58. Usually, it will crash when you add too much ethanol for the hpfp can handle, which as a result then becomes an issue. I think precise calculations for the e30 mix will solve the issue.

I've got access to mostly 91 fuel with occasional 93. Wondering if the Dinan wouldn't be better suited for it over BM3

hpfp crashes on regular stage 2, let alone e30. A TU pump is cheap and easy to install

Yeah, Ill probably go the tu hpfp route. I heard merlin diesel has the cheapest one for around $335 USD.
