F33 roof issues
Hi everyone
After years of wanting a convertible, i fetched my F33 (420i RHD) on Friday from a dealership. Saturday evening the roof started giving me issues however I managed to get it closed. I get the roof not latched error. The left rear window doesn't go up or down anymore and I'm assuming this is stopping the roof from opening or closing. So i was in the process of taking the car for a sunset drive yesterday, opened the roof halfway and then it got stuck. So the car has been sitting in the garage with the roof stuck on halfway, I tried searching for a way to close the roof manually so I can still drive it to work but I couldn't come right. Even with using the all 4 window button, only the 3 windows work. I checked the window control panel but everything works there, you even hear the clicking sound in the boot when you try to roll the left rear window down so I'm assuming its got something in the boot or by the actual window. I've searched online and know these cars have issues with water, I will check this out on Thursday evening when I get a chance and drain them from the plugs under the car. I also saw online that it could be a window regulator or some cable that needs to be replaced by the window. Does anybody know what exactly could be the issue or where can I start looking 1st by process of elimination? Also if anybody knows how to manually close the roof, please share as Uber for the next 3 days is quite costly. I have notified the dealership and they will get back to be during the course of the day as to how they can assist but things work a bit differently in South Africa where after sales service is non existent. |

So an update while I've had time over the past 2 nights.
I checked all fuses, engine compartment, above battery, boot and passenger footwell. All the fuses are fine I took out the regulator halfway so I could get to the connector to the motor. I unplugged it and connected a tester. When I try to put the window up or down, there is not constant power to the motor. There is power for a split second and then nothing. This happens if I use that specific window button AND the all 4 down/up button. Only the other 3 move I also tested the salmon relays in the boot by the roof pump and they are both on 79 Ohms. Any idea of where else I can look to see why the window is not getting constant power, relays etc? |

Good day
There is no water anywhere. I even checked the drainage holes and bone dry. Its not the regulator or motor because the power is not constant when you hold the switch up or down. It basically powers up for a second and off, in that second, it doesnt even move the window. Im going to try and disconnect the battery today and connect it again after 30 minutes or so. I was dumb not to do it the other day when i checked the fuses by the REM. That corner carpet is a pain to remove. In other suggestions of what to check is welcome... |

try replacing that window regulator. It's a common problem from the e93 which messes up the top, so it's probably the same issue in the f33.

Another update
I gave up finding the issue. I managed to manually put the roof down, will take it to a repair shop which the dealership will pay for on Tuesday. I hope it doesnt take them long to figure out the issue and fix. |

There aren't many of us F33 owners, so please share everything you learn. We need as big a repository of knowledge as we can get. Have you learned the trick about opening the roof halfway to disconnect the 12V battery? |

Hi everyone
Since the roof was half open, all I had to do was loosen the nut (gold Allen key nut) by the pump to depressurize the system and the whole roof folded down manually. (2 person job) The nut is inside the "black tube" if I can call it that, see below So the roof repair center said that the window motor was actually gone and needed to be replaced which I found weird as the motor wasn't getting constant power when the switch was held up or down. But anyways, they replaced that and serviced the roof 1 time, the roof was never serviced before. I picked up the car on Friday and since then everything is working like how it should. hopefully I have no more issues for the foreseeable future. Now to start modding... |
