Wish I had more insight on your issue to offer advice BUT....

In that 2nd video i noticed your rear BMW trunk emblem moved, is that aftermarket or is that how the 640i works??

Does the smoke smell sweet or like burning oil?

I'm not sure why it did that. Nothing aftermarket. Had it in neutral to rev it.

You think so? I'd rather have that than the head gasket. I hope you are right... What specifically makes you think it's the turbo?

Turbos are oil cooled, when they fail, oil will get into the induction system and you'll burn oil like a mofo.... Get the turbo inspected, stop running/driving the car.

Thanks. It's just sitting in my garage for the time being. No driving. Will have it towed to BMW for service.

Here is why I haven't done it so far:

I bought the car from a private party and sent the warranty transfer paperwork to BMW. It has to be notarized and costs $200. After this happened, I called BMW and they told me it takes 6-8 weeks to transfer the warranty. I am afraid to bring it to BMW before the warranty is in my name in the event it is something VERY expensive and BMW tries to get out of honoring the warranty.

Thoughts?

My biggest concern would be taking your car to the dealer with an aftermarket intake and downpipe.... bmw doesn't take kindly to aftermarket stuff when it comes to warranty repairs.

Everything is currently in stock configuration. I was told by a few people it wouldn't make a difference since the mods downstream from the issue. Not sure what exactly that means... not even sure exactly what the issue is. Just want to play it safe

Did your mechanic scan any stored codes? That would one of the first steps to take.

Yes, he just looked at it and said it was wrong... Not sure what it actually said. I asked and he said nothing related to what could be causing the issue.

Time to find a new mechanic. Codes aren't the definitive answer, but they are thrown for a reason.

dealership will definitely void your warranty due to a downpipe.

if it ever pulled downpipe codes, the dealership will see that as well.

What do you think the odds are he caused this issue? Asking because I’m clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff, hence why I brought it to him to modify and tune. I relied on his experience and knowledge.

Just a bad cooincodence or a direct result
of his negligence?

Under 50k miles, full inspection from BMW within last 6 months for the CPO warranty. No issues found at that time

Could a careless downpipe installation and overtorque crack the turbo? Sounds like you have a failed turbo.

Interested in what happens. If you take it to the dealer with an aftermarket downpipe, you're toast in terms of any warranty. They'll blame it on that part, the installation, whatever -- and they have every cause to do so.

It was fine until someone messed around in there, now its bad. The simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Sorry bud.

1. You need to get a list or invoice of exactly everything that was done to your car. Can't begin to figure out what might be wrong if you don't know what was done.

2. Don't go back to this shop. Just installing an AFE intake and ER catless DP even without a tune should not cause these problems. With the catless DP, you will get a CEL but that is only because the car is throwing an emissions code. Won't adversely affect the engine otherwise. Neither should the intake. (Assuming proper installation)
*Note: Aftermarket intake is a waste, won't gain you anything but a lighter wallet.

3. That much white smoke from exhaust means coolant getting into cylinders so probably blown head gasket. Cause ould be vacuum leak from improperly installed intake and/or improperly installed downpipe causing the 02 sensor to read wrong. Either would cause the DME to try to make adjustments and engine would not run right. And if the shop took the car for a spin to test with an improperly running engine, bad things can happen.

4. You need to make sure when you have work done that you take it to a shop with a good reputation. And you should learn about your car, its engine and how it works.

5. I would put everything back to stock before you bring it to BMW. If not, they will void the warranty.

I can't really agree more with what Space said.

The biggest thing here is just taking some time to learn what you're doing, what you're talking about, and what you're blowing your money on. There is so much unknown in this thread from your responses, the crappy shop you used to do the work on your car, and just the uncertainty in what is going on.

It is your car, you spent however much you spent on it, and you have very little knowledge about anything going on. Not trying to be an asshole here, just saying to take some time to really understand what is going on so you don't have to go to forums to have people figure it out for you.

that shop screwed you to put it lightly.

definitely, echo what everyone else has said. Just put the car back to stock, pray they don't find any trail of you putting on the downpipe, and hope everything gets fixed under warranty.

You could find a member that lives close to you that could do a better job of installing the parts that shop did, and for a whole lot cheaper I'm sure.
