B58 repair cost question
Whatsup bmw fam,
I drive a 2016 340i with around 46k miles. My car started blowing white smoke out the exhaust and seems to be “choking” during acceleration around 2-3k rpm, just not driving smooth. Eventually the CEL popped up so I ran the codes and I got an o2 sensor issue. Took it to my shop and they told me I needed a purge valve, upstream o2 sensor, and a software update. Shop tech told me the purge valve is making noise and causing air and fuel mixture problems, that caused a rich condition which ruined the O2 sensors. I’m currently running a VRSF catless downpipe and that’s all, everything else is stock. They quoted me at $1,287 for everything. Has anyone had any issues regarding their purge valve and do you guys think this is actually the issue? I’ll also attach the quote from the shop as well for a breakdown of the price. Please let me know thanks guys! |

Get part numbers from them. If that purge valve is the one linked below don’t pay them to install. Literally a 5 minute job with no tools required.
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...e/13907643106/ That upstream oxygen sensor should be relatively easy to replace as well. Edit: also check the following link. Does this apply? https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2099244 Last edited by LA430; 05-01-2024 at 07:11 AM.. |

Anyways, I’m not sure if I’ve received that letter but I’ll def give them a call and see if I can get that fixed. My main concern is, if that’s even going to fix all my issues. I feel like the white smoke could be a valve cover or PCV problem. But thank you brotha! 👍🏼 |

I believe white smoke is generally more pcv related, might as well replace that while you're at it.
purge valve and o2 can be bought for less than $300, labor for each is super easy. |

What they said. Both are a really simple DIY if you have some metric tools.
Since the car was shipped without that software update (8-years ago), one could argue "it'll be fine without it". That one sounds like a "license to print money". Just saying! |

you will need this to remove the O2 sensor. There are a bunch of DIY videos on Youtube.
