Hi all,

Wonder if anyone can recommend a cleaner to remove the leather shine from a non m sport steering wheel. I can see the nice matte finish it’s meant to be from the little touched areas around the buttons. I’ve seen plenty of videos about the soft leather m sport wheel, but how about the ‘sport’ wheel? Is it treated any differently?

I use the same product on all of our leather surfaces regardless of the make of car or the type of leather.

Unfortunately, the product I use is not longer made, so I can't recommend it, but a good quality leather cleaner should get the shiny gunk off and return it to a nice, matte, soft feel. Follow that up with a conditioner/protectant and you'll be good to go. Frequent cleanings will keep it looking good.

I have used Dr Leather wipes in the past with decent results on both steering wheels and seats

Walmart has leather cleaners and conditioners (Chemical Guys, Lexol). Also get the round blue microfiber/terry applicators. Maybe treat you steering wheel ever 6-12 months depending on how much oil and sweat from your hands build up.

Magic Eraser also works...but leaves a white film...that you can wash off.

If your leather is cracked and dry....you can get a rewrapped steering wheel.

I noticed that pre-2015 cars all have slimey leather steering wheels. 2016+ steering wheels have a more matte leather finish.

I'm not sure I'd use a Magic Eraser on the soft steering wheel leather, at least what is found on my M Sport wheel. They are more abrasive than they appear and I'd be afraid of it scuffing the leather and damaging the coating.

Using a quality APC designed for auto detailing purposes (I use Poorboys World APC in dilution for interiors) should cut through all the grime built up on a steering wheel pretty easily with just a microfiber towel. You'd be surprised by how much gunk accumulates over time. Following up with a good leather leather cleaner/conditioner and a protectant will leave a nice matte finish and soft feel like new.

Use this and nothing else.

The cleaning foam and bristle brush will get all of the hand grease, skin, and oil from the steering wheel - which is what makes it shiny.

I tried the Chemical guys cleaner on mine with a microfiber and it left it matte again.

My usual Lexol did not.

for leather interior I use Meguiar's cleaner and conditioner

I use the Meguiar's too. It gives a nice matte look and think it's available in the us too.

Don't typically use Chemical Guys products but when I picked up my used 340 the steering wheel was shiny and CG Cleaner then Conditioner brought it back to a nice matte finish

Depends on the severity, as one poster mentioned that shiny surface is caused by oils, dirt, and other chemicals on your hands that just sort of build up on the wheel, filling in the little pores and surface imperfections that give leather that matte look and feel.

#1 best method is prevention! Clean the leather frequently. I just carry around a bottle of leather wipes in the car and will give it a cleaning about once a week or whenever it starts to feel off.

Leather wipes can also take care of minor buildup. If it gets worse than that, a dedicated leather cleaner should be used. I use Lexol or Leatherique, again depending on the severity of what needs to be cleaned. Several attempts may need to be made before the matte finish is restored, again depending on the severity.

In extreme cases when you can see your reflection in the leather, rubbing alcohol may be necessary to clean. And again, it may take several attempts or followups with leather cleaner.

Be careful not to be TOO aggressive with cleaning, sometimes shiny patches may not be dirt at all but simply damage or wear to the grain itself. For this reason also be very careful with using Magic Erasers. I've used them but would not recommend it to others, it's very easy to wear the surface finish right off if you aren't paying attention or get too aggressive.

Following any cleaning method it's important to put a protectant/surface finish on the leather. For non-Nappa Aerospace 303 is fine, protects well and leaves a nice feel. For Nappa or similar grade an actual leather conditioner is best. I prefer Zaino Z10 for regular use. Good protection, excellent feel, and smells very nice as well.
