Oil Filter Housing Gasket: To replace or not?
My 335i completely died and left me stranded on the highway Thursday, but luckily I was about a half mile from a dealership when this happened. Turns out that the fuse for the fuel pump failed, so they replaced that and I believe a fuel pump (I have the service paper, I'm just too lazy to go check exactly what it was they replaced) under an open recall (lucky for me! Car's been out of factory warranty for a year), but then being a dealership they emailed me the "recommended deferred service" report. The recommended rear brake rotors and pads (which I knew I needed to replace soon anyway), "BLOWN EKPS MODULE FUISE" (which is silly, because they just replaced it, but they're claiming its going to keep happening because of my "aftermarket boost adjuster" as the woman called it. JB4 lol), and finally the oil filter housing gasket.
What's interesting to me is that from the multi-point inspection, the only thing that was marked as requires attention was the rear brakes, and future attention was the tires. No oil or other leaks, and all hoses, clamps etc. are "checked and OK at this time." I know it's a b!tch because of everything you need to take off to reach the gasket itself, so it would probably not be something I would want to tackle myself. Should I actually consider getting this gasket replaced anytime soon as preventative maintenance, or is this a dealer sham trying to get another $1000 out of me? Thanks |

If the housing leak is the front gasket between the oil cooler lines assembly and the Filter housing, that is a relatively simple 30 min DIY. Usually if it is this gasket you see oil pooling on top of the housing below the filter cover. If it is the gasket between the housing and the engine, that is a little more involved, but not difficult.

If you are 2013 and 50K+ over, it's best to replace now. I waited long after the oil leak to replace the gasket and ended up spending hours cleaning up the engine.

I'm waiting. I just check it at the end of the week when I garage the car for the weekend.
If you're not under the hood often then ya, if the leak gets bad enough it will eventually cause the belt to slip and possibly get injested into the engine through the front main seal.
