Trade in value less than WBAC?
Hello all,
So I'm trying to persuade my wife to swap her car. She currently has an X-trail. She owes £15.5k on it, and we know that trade-in won't cover that, so looking to maybe add it onto the finance of the new car. The car we are looking at will come out about the same per month she is paying now if we can get the negative equity down to about £2k. The value we get from WBAC is £12,250. So we think OK, so a dealer will probably be around £13k. We have got a valuation back from the dealer and it's only £11k! That's the first I've seen a dealer offer lower than WBAC. Is this normal now? Everything is online at the moment as most dealers are closed.

Expect the WBAC valuation to decrease once they look over the car and find a few flaws , which they will.
The dealers valuation will be on their "safe" side of the valuation , if the X Trial is in outstanding condition then , possibly , you may get more face to face to bring it in line with the decreased WBAC valuation. K |

I would have thought a price from a dealer will almost always be less than wbac unless they are muddying their valuation into what you are paying for the new car. I always prefer to negotiate the two separately - get the best deal you can on the new car and only then ask what they would give for the old one and just shop around. At that price point I think I would try a private sale first... Also reviewing Autotrader for the same car age/mileage gives a good idea what you could get - probably £2k less than what dealers are asking - you want to be looking at being comfortably the cheapest on there for age mileage. Their valuation is also a pretty good guide... Evans Halshaw is also a good place to get an immediate online valuation... Don't forget the car has to be prestine to actually get the price wbac offer - they'll soon be knocking £500 off by the time you add the fee/kerbed wheels etc... Some have been successful using Wizzle/Motorway but I've never found that they match wbac - really depends on the car and demand for it... However you do it though it sounds like you will be £2-2.5k short of £15.5k...

Thanks. I understand that WBAC isnt a set in stone price.
We took on old car there and tbh, we bought the car cheap, and it was a heap. We were honest about the problems it had and they couldnt take any more money off the valuation as their system is an automated tick box thing. So we would have got what we were quoted, but we sold it to a friend instead. Im sure that a couple of times Ive traded cars in, the trade in has been more than the WBAC quote, so just thought it was strange that it was that much lower. My wife is a bit fussy and would want to trade in her car and drive home with another one rather than sell her car, and be without a car even if its only for an hour. Its no biggy really, just thought it was odd.

Separating the transactions is a way to make sure you get best deal on both. Xtrails of that vintage (guessing from value) are pretty sought after and I am sure it would be more valuable to some dealers than others, no idea what your wife is looking at buying but if they are going to punt it in the trade to a tame dealer then he will want to be paying less than auction if possible, the dealer you are selling to will want to as a minimum cover their costs, and so WBAC and clean auction value could be better. Of course if she is looking at another Nissan they will just be taking the michael like BMW dealers often do! |

The car she (I) want is a Peugeot 308 GTi, so the trade-in is at a Peugeot dealer. Her car is the top of the range one and its a 67 plate. Ive no idea whether these are sought after or not, I dont really follow them like I do BMWs. I've asked her to have a look at what the bank says for her.

Tell her to sort it out herself & seriously, she doesn't want to be without a car for even a few hours?Definitely a keeper there. You keep her to save the rest of mankind .
Sell to WBAC, you can chauffeur her to the dealership & everyones a winner |

You can just take out a bank loan to cover the difference. Then repay it in full as soon as the old one sells - that would cost you under £50 in interest assuming you get rid of it in a month or two. Obviously there is also the hassle of additional insurance for that period too. Depends if you want the hassle - I would think there is £1000-1250 to be made by doing that & selling privately or £500-750 by going to wbac...which for me is worth doing but it is hassle and you need space for the extra car if you sell privately and I know that process isn't for everybody either... My wife would rather a new necklace than giving away money to a stealer...

She's looking at the bank loan option now.
Whether she will commit or not is up to her lol.

I’ve always had good prices from Wizzle and it’s certainly worth a try. Not just the first stage though, that’s the same as the WBAC process.
It asks you after if you want to add a photo and send out to dealers. You only need to add one pic if you want to and then fill in some tick boxes on condition, takes 5 minutes max. Then Wizzle send it out to dealers, both independent and main dealer. On my X3 I had Sytner bidding against Statstone on Wizzle for my car, both higher offers than trade in and WBAC. |

I got offered £8500 from WBAC recently for my 330d. Sold it privately for £11k. Reckon I could have got a bit more if I weren't so keen to get rid before the new one came.

WBAC was better than the trade-in for my wifes car. We got an online quote, then went to the yard and got a real valuation (was about £200 less)
IIRC they honour the price for 1week or so. It then leaves you with a solid benchmark on the price. But, as said above - you are best to get a no-trade in deal with your new car (use carwow or similar to drive the price down). Then when happy with the price, ask for a trade-in. Then compare to WBAC/Arnold Clark/Evans Halshaw/etc. |

I've always sold my cars privately and earned at least a 1000 extra each time. Worst(or best) was my 2011 320d wirh 120k miles on the clock which the BMW dealer offered me £2500 max in part ex but a lovely old lady bought it for £4k from me and since I sold it to her its done 6.5k miles in 3 years clean mot advisories each time in line with when I sold her it.

I'm still looking for a 4 series convertible and have just sold my F57 Mini Cooper S to a BMW/Mini main dealer for over £3k more than the WBAC offer, and £1k more than the best P/X value when enquiring about potential exchanges
Surprising, but very pleasing |

Nothing new to be honest. My mrs sold her GLC 43 to WBAC in Jan 20 for 1K more than several dealers were offering in px (inc a Mercedes dealer). The on line offer was £1.5 K more , but as said they reduced this a bit and there is a sales fee, but still we were £1K up and deal was done in 30mins, cash in bank next day.
