Ah man you guys are crazy I think the only reason why I dont like it is it gets stuck to my clothes sometimes and I can smell it after I get out of the car and there's a breeze.

I've actually found that putting the AC on filter, but not recirculate helps... I guess recirculate just compounds the crayon scent and i get more whiffs of it.

Also getting my front windshield tinted is nice because the car doesnt get baked as much.

I'm curious whether anyone who lives in a strictly colder climate ever has this smell. My garage kept E90 never had this smell, but my parked in the sun F31 has it distinctly.

I live in Utah. Very hot in the summer (100+) and very cold in the winter (below zero at times) and I have never experienced said crayon smell.

Yup. The summer heat melts the crayon in my 3.

Yeah I think it has a direct relationship with temperature.

I think the worse part is that it's not reversible. I'm in South Florida, so 80% of the year is above 80 degrees so I'm stuck with the smell basically forever.

My E46 smelled like crayons the entire time I? owned it. My friends used to make fun of the fact that such an expensive car smelled like a Crayola box.

Garage List
2013 BMW 335i  [0.00]
In my previous car a 2002 E39 530i the smell of crayons was always noted when guests got in the car. In my F30 I dont really smell it at all and I have leather. But that smell will most likely stay.

Some have said it's the Sensatec leather.

I've wiped down my seats with some Meguiars leather wipe and i would say it helped a little, but the smell is still there. I've got two Ozium air fresheners in the back seat cup holders, but I still get whiffs of the crayons.

Now that F30s are getting in the 3-5 year old range, has anyone encountered and fixed the smell?

THanks!

I'm starting to think everyone is having different reactions based on the smell; I have the leather interior as well and sometimes I smell pure leather and others, a glue/wax/crayon type smell. (I personally like both)

To those that "cannot stand it", try driving a Cadillac around for a few years THEN complain about this smell....night and day. This can be "cleared up" much easier by masking it appropriately. Moldy and musty is no way to ride in a luxury car and would never go away....

Crayons smell issue is solved

Solved, latest update to the interior/cabin smell :
the smell is confirmed to be the insulation material , mainly the front insulation under the dashboard.

My car is BMW 2013 M135i, bot from BMW dealer in 2021 with extended warranty.
The smell mainly come from the gap between the window and the dashboard.
the smell is strong when the carbin is hot , eg. switch to hot A/C facing up or just put the car under the sun for a few hours.
the smell is weak when A/C temperature is cool or use a big towel to block all the gaps on top of the dashboard .

Took 2 weeks to oder the new sound insulation boards from BMW Germany . Cost only around $200
Then took around 8~12 hours to install the new parts. cost $2500 for labour.
all paid by BMW dealer under warranty.

Good luck everyone, don't buy old BMW, they used faulty material in old models. especially F20,F30
