Break fluid alert? 2001?

Has my oil changed at dealership and check up at local mechanic. Everything fine. Did some mod tinkering and bummer code. Randomly I check the vehicle screen and see alert for break fluid and the year 2001? How did that happen? I doubt my car needs it and it's a 2017

The service interval for brake fluid is two years, whether it needs it or not. I use one of these so I can be sure if it needs it, or not:

You can do a reset of the brake fluid warning in the usual manner. Why you have that 2001 I can't imagine.

That is a weird one, unless something in bimmercode (or you) reset something it shouldn't, and the date got messed up?

Did the technician break something while changing your brake fluid? After his break, ask him to reset your date!

possibly. they didn't reset the maintenance check. local mechanic.

I did install a pke system and disconnected the battery. should that be it?

might buy that tool to check the break fluid. is that the only way to check?

The only effect of disconnecting the battery is that you might have to reset the clock. A tester is the only way to check the brake fluid for water content, the car doesn't have that ability. That being the case BMW uses a time based interval, which means they'd have you change it whether it needs it or not. If your local mechanic doesn't know how to do a reset on a BMW he shouldn't be working on a BMW.

What happens if he tried to reset the fluid indicator when the clock was cleared? Does it allow you to do that (and force a date like that)?

I have no idea how he got the clock to show a date that is not only before the car was built but also before the iDrive version existed.

If all else fails, perhaps contact a priest.

Considering its indicating Dec, I'd say that's just a backend default that was coded into it.

For the products I've did, I use 12/31/1999 purely since its easy to spot as "that ain't right".

Might be what BMW uses as "start of time" and then they just add seconds on top of it (like Linux starting 1969/12/31, or Mac 1904/12/31). You can get away with a smaller variable size (16 bit vs 32 bit) if you don't need to keep adding on the "static" time offset.
