Coding backup camera to stay on in neutral?

I back out of my garage with my 2016 340i and when I put it in reverse to get out, the backup camera comes on.

But, as my driveway slopes down, I drop into neutral and keep rolling back to the bottom where I stop before getting onto the street because I have shrubs blocking my view.

Every time the backup camera turns off as soon as I stop and I have to turn on parking assist and then the backup camera. Do you know of a way to code it to keep it on until I turn it off or go into a forward gear?

Interesting...mine stays on after switching out of reverse, even while I'm moving forward until I reach a certain speed. I didn't have to code it to do that.

But, you can mess around with it in Bimmercode. It's under rear electronic module. Down near the bottom, you'll see rear view camera speed and distance switch-off threshold. Mine are set to 15 km/h and 10 m respectively, but can go as high as 50 km/h or 250 m.

Just above that, there's also a setting 'activate PDC when rolling backwards'. Mine is on not active, but you might change yours to active and see what it does.

You can code it to stay on up to a defined speed and a defined distance in Rear Electronic Module> Rear view camera.

I like the 'rolling backwards' option. Seems like it should do what I want!

Thanks for the pointers, guys!

Same here. Initially I thought it might be a manual vs auto thing, but after your comments, I think it's a default function of the car. Do you have a manual or an automatic?

Do you know if it was ever a default function? My car was never coded before my ownership (as far as I know) and I've never done any coding, yet my back up camera and all the sensors stay active until I hit a certain speed.

I can back up and the camera stays on after backing up whether I'm in reverse, neutral, or 1st gear.

Same here, that's default.

Automatic on mine.

You can even code the camera to stay on, and to be able to turn it on from the console switch at any speed. This is useful if you've got cargo blocking the view of the rear view mirror. I did that using ESys, I don't know if it's possible with Bimmercode in expert mode.

Now that would be something I'd like to activate. I like to keep an eye on my cargo when I've got kayaks or other stuff strapped to my trailer. It's pretty hard to do that with any of the mirrors, it actually is pretty much impossible. I'd love to switch it on while on the road to keep an eye on things every now and then.

Alternatively (or in addition), you could back into your driveway/garage and then pull out forward into the street. Camera stays on b/c your are in reverse into the garage and your line of sight is much better pulling out than backing out. Much safer all around that way.

I know that would solve my issue, but backing up a sloped driveway into a garage is a maneuver I'd rather not do too often. Might be safer for me, but not for my clutch or house...both of which I value more than myself.

Appreciate your thoughts!

With ESys you code the REM CAFD lines for distance and speed from FF to 00.
Be aware if you do this the camera doesn't turn off after you've been in reverse, you have to change the iDrive view to whatever you normally have running.

Wouldn't it just be easier to leave it in reverse and keep the clutch depressed while you roll down hill?

Not sure what you are saving by popping it into neutral, stopping and then back into reverse to get onto the street. You are wearing your synchro's much faster than that throw out bearing.

Honestly, half the time I'm stopped pressing buttons in my car for something...and I've been of the belief that holding the clutch pedal down isn't that good either. My last clutch lasted 386k miles so I've got strong habits that'd be hard to break.

I'm going to try coding soon-ish and see if either 'on when rolling back' or 'always on' works for me and will report back.

That did it...thanks for the ideas!

I've increased the length of the 'roll' from 10m to 100m and also selected "turn on when rolling back"--my camera stays on for when I need it.

Thank you all so much!
