I received a letter today on my 2015 335i but it is a bit different. It essentially just extends the warranty to 10 yrs/120k miles for the "Bolts for the electric motor of the power steering gear". Later it says "This is not a notice of a Recall or Service Action". So i guess some cars get a recall and others like me just get a warranty extension.

I just received the letter which I think confirms what I now believe is the issue I've been complaining about to BMW for two years. Like the letter posted below states, I have a rattling in the steering column whenever I run over uneven pavement. The dealership is in the suburbs and I've never been able to get it to replicate out there. Now I have ammunition to make them investigate this further.

Just received a letter for my 2015 335i on steering EPS bolts.
Not a recall. Only a limited warranty extension for the bolts to 10 years, 120,000 miles. Located in Los Angeles, CA. How hard is it for them to replace with new, better bolts? |

It takes an hour. 45 minutes of that are putting the car on a lift, removing the bottom shield to access the steering rack, putting the shield back in place after replacing the bolts, and taking the car off the lift.

If they are just replacing the 3 bolts, I would imagine there being updated part numbers for these new stronger bolts... Might be prudent for us to do as a preventative measure for those cars who are just receiving an extended warranty instead of a fix. |

There is no recall. With some cars there's an extended warranty. Those are probably the ones BMW thinks are least likely to have a failure. With some there's a service campaign. Those are probably the ones BMW thinks are more likely to have a failure. The service campaign calls for inspection of the bolts, replacing them if they appear to be corroding. What they've done about the bolts isn't known. They're not in the parts catalog, as normally the rack isn't repaired when there's a problem, it's replaced. But that was before they started failing in large enough numbers that someone finally identified a fault and a fix. Of course BMW has bolts that they're shipping to dealers to be used in the service campaign, and one would assume that they're upgraded from those creating the problems, but on that point only BMW knows for sure.

Lovely, got the extended warranty letter 10yr/120kmi). But I am stationed overseas so it’s not valid. I hope this issue doesn’t come up. I kind of bought a newer car exactly to avoid this crap. Not a great first BMW experince (coming from 14 years Mercedes ownership)

Exact same thing happened to my 2012 328i a few days ago. Luckily it happened in my driveway and not on the streets or highway. I had the car towed to the dealer. I checked my VIN number on BMW Canada's database (I live in Ottawa, ON) and there is no recall on my car.
But thanks to you guys, I told the service rep about this known issue online and ask him to check the "recall" in the US. The service rep called back today saying the manufacturer will replace the whole rack unit plus an alignment under "warranty" (my warranty ran out in 2016). I ask him about my friend's bimmers and he said they should bring in their cars for this "recall". |

I guess it will extend to Canada as well eventually. I was lucky in that my 2012 did not see any real issues associated with this recall but I got it done anyway yesterday. Took them a couple of hours in the morning to fix it.

I also received the letter.
Im wondering if living in a harsh climate... particularly one that uses a salt like solution on the roads... has an impact on people with this failure? Im going to mention it when Im do for 'vehicle check' in 5k miles or so. Hopefully they give it a good inspection and maybe even change my bolts even though Im not really experiencing any issues at this time. |

Did the dealership cover the work? My warranty is out on my 2014 and this very same thing just happened to me as soon as I started the car this afternoon. I've found 2 out of the 3 broken bolts but its Sunday afternoon so of course nobody is at BMW service to help. |
