There is always this risk. Tune is a lot safer, since it's not insane for power/reliability, but if you are leasing, you are effectively "renting" a car from BMW.
Pro Tip - don't make viral videos about how you're doubling your car's output and you'll be fine lol.

I remember reading about that guy as well and it certainly was an extreme case.

I'm wondering if there are any other known cases of this "force to buy" scenario because it seems to me as long as the tune is reversible and no damage was done that most dealers would not go to such extremes.

I have a feeling Tuning a car is like doing cocaine, that in the end, even if you stopped doing blow after 1988, your ticker still might be damaged enough to shorten your life a bit

Curious, does the AGG maps make timing retard since it runs richer? Especislly if you dont have a straight pipe equipped and only a downpipe.

This has been happening a lot in the UK. BMW UK have become aware of modified cars via social media, particularly Instagram and YouTube and have written to a number of customers who had purchased cars on finance. In some cases they’ve requested an inspection, in others they have demanded payment in full or the customer faces repossession of the car.

That was a pretty extreme case. I've never heard of it before, and a doubt you'd have any issues doing a tune + DP. At the same token, don't post viral videos of you doing silly stuff if you don't want to get slapped.

I think sometimes people like to play up the drama but I definitely don't have first hand experience - still riding the fence on BM3 with this new lease lol..

Just to confirm - when you flash back to stock it is 100% stock and the only remnants of the original tune is evidence of the flash being done if BMW digs deep at some point?

Is there a B58 trans tune coming soon or should I just go with xHP?

yes. it puts you back at all original settings.

Anyone know if there's a cheat sheet for the BM3 B58 tuning / map editor?

What exactly are you looking for? The settings I see are pretty straight forward and self-explanatory (burble on/off, etc).

Sorry, should have made it clear. I am looking at the map editor part, where you can tune the engine via BM3. As with many modern ECU's, they are very complex, with multiple compensation tables.

I don't think there is one. I was more interested until i realized they only offer stock maps. I thought they allowed you to adjust a tune yourself, but starting from scratch is a little more intimidating.

I'm sure if you have specific questions they'll answer, but don't expect them to hold your hand through it.

What you are asking for is Bootmod's proprietary IP around their tune. Yeh… good luck finding that! You will never find a "map editor". BMW doesn't want you inside their DME, and BM3 isn't going to show you what they learned/did.

This isn't public domain knowledge.

BM3 has a map editor on the stock tune page. you CAN tune your own car with their platform.

Yeah the editor is available but for stock tune only. I was just commenting I was disappointed because I thought it was true open source and wanted to bump around values on my tune myself, but I understand why they keep their OTS tunes locked down. And I wouldn't expect them to be too open about how they set up the tables considering it's hard enough to get info on what "improved boost control" means on the previous revision updates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you need to register with BM3 as a tuner to be able to use that map editor.

Part of my job is tuning small engine EFI. Without a dyno, it's pretty tough to get anything right, and I personally wouldn't want to be randomly playing with a turbo tune without the proper tools. It is almost impossible to destroy a non-aspirated single/twin engine. Not really the case with this one if you don't know what you are doing!

My two cents....

That's probably why he's asking for a starting point/FAQ

Honestly with a base map it's not hard to adjust a tune. He's not making it from scratch. It's just hard to make the most efficient use of the powerband. We've had 4 updates already since release, and all of them can be made with the map editor. And, as expected, PTF isn't sharing too many details on what they changed to improve on the tunes.

From what I gather, the main thing we do for our ECUs is set load targets based on pedal position/RPM, and then increase req boost and req timing based on load. That should be a good starting point to get more power. There will be a lot of finesse in keeping it OEM-Like smooth though.
