Intresting Thread, what about the flip side of age vs milage? My 2015 335 GT (N55) is currenlty at 38k Miles. Was CPO untill this past year and currently under CC+ for another year.
I know its not E36 old but the reputation of BMW parts needing to be replaced at time intervals in lieu of milage is real. I'm thinking some preventiative thingns will need to be done at the 7yr mark regardless of miles. |

Originally asked because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to trade-in/sell/keep the GT for a larger vehicle. Ultimately got my SUV and kept the GT, best of both worlds. Thanks for all the data, keep it coming guys/gals.

Im not very familar with the "newer" BMW's (2010+) as it relates to this but the older E46, E36 era cars developed a track record on the forums for various things, an example being water pumps, radiator clutch fans, various plastic parts / hoses etc with people basically saying plan to replace at XX,XXX miles or Y years as the part would be notorious for failing in a specific window.

Just rolled 62k after buying last... looks like around September last year at 49k.
So that would be 2 oil changes so far, each at 5k miles and spark plugs at 60k which was actually not bad at all. Ignition coil just went, I thought it was maybe transmission the way it acted when the error code flipped and it went to limp mode. I was punching it in first in manual sport plus after slowly rolling off a gravel shoulder and it was slow to react then pinged redline twice as I let off the pedal. I figured transmission slip, but it was the ECU detecting the misfire in cylinder 6 then the thing flipping to limp, it had to go through neutral? To do so? So that threw me for a bit just not being familiar with the way it behaves when it goes into limp mode, this was first time. Otherwise, ownership has been an utter blast, it drives exactly like what I wanted. A highway mile shredding secret weapon that will do great in Colorado winters and on the windy canyons with the wheelbase making up for the extra clearance handling wise. This will be the last ICE car I buy for myself, and when it is no longer my daily I am going to rally cross it, as my '89 Montero is now my electric conversion project. I rolled 300k miles on that thing in Moab last Spring as the sendoff from being my daily for 6 or so years. |

My '18 had just shy of 45k miles on it when I got it about a month ago and I've put another 2k miles on it since then. Other than normal wear items like brakes, the only slightly concerning service record is an issue it was having with the automatic braking systems that I had them fix before I bought it. Not sure what exactly the cause was, but the service ticket shows that they replaced the transfer case and a transmission bearing set. All under warranty for a bit longer, so all-in-all not too terrible. Worst case if problems surface I'm lucky enough to work at a shop specializing in European cars...

I'm guessing cars made before 2016 don't have this problem, right?

In terms of issues, I am currently dealing with a sunroof sunshade not closing, exposing the interior to good ol Toronto summer sun. Luckily the glass is in the close position, but it wont go into vent, or slide mode. I tried to do the sunroof reset procedure, holding the sunroof button 15-20 seconds/ minutes on hand and nothing. Even did a battery terminal disconnect/ reset, and even used a friend's diagnostic tool to "reset" the error codes that appeared regarding the sunroof. Nothing worked. Other than that, no issues. Recently replaced my engine air filter and cabin air filter. Last edited by DannnnyG; 08-05-2021 at 08:37 PM.. |

110k miles. No issues whatsoever. Had it since 25k. Used only Liquid Moly with engine flush every other oil change. Switched to Magnum Flow Pro 5T air filter and she loves it. Replaced control arms at the front on both corners. Replaced gaskets for oil filter housing and thermostat. Usual stuff for this car really so I would say it has been a learning experience and a joy to own and drive.

Update: Sunroof sunshade issue went away back in Oct after playing around with the sunroof button. Works completely fine, which is strange... (knocks on wood) |

Bad alignment at purchase (56k on odo) from CarMax i didn't know about ate up the tires it came with, so 700$ plus 200$ for tires and alignment, Costco and dealership.
1 day out of commission. Coolant valve stuck open, fixed under (specifically extended for this reason) warranty, no cost. 1 day off. Rear cigarette lighter fuse went out, 12$ for a box of every fuse I'll need forever. 1 hour. Replaced front brakes, 200$, plus helpful friend with tools. 3 hours, 2 breakfast burritos. Just had the valve cover gasket/valve cover replaced for an oil leak. I could smell it. That was 1200$ on the nose. 88k on the odo. Brake fluid flush, oil change 300$ extra. 2 days off. Underglow off amazon, 65$, 12 hours of work on cold ground. Worth it to live out my NFS: Underground childhood fantasy. Tighten when I drive by cops, but I checked the Neon Laws. I'm probably legal. A few oil changes in the driveway probably amounted to less than 150$ and a couple hours each. Overall, these are not surprising. Not terribly costly. And shouldn't be repeat repairs. Though all told it's about the projected cost of ownership after a little over two years. But it has never left me stranded or failed to start on the coldest day. I think that if you keep your car maintained and clean, so handle it with a bit of tlc, it can go on for a lot of miles. I have driven a e46 over 350.000 km's (approx. 217.000 miles) and two e91's well over 325.000 km (approx. 200.000 miles) without any major concerns. The e46 faced some upcoming costs that had me decided to trade it in for an E91. Both E91's were still not facing any huge costs when i traded them in. In fact, my last E91 that i left at the cardealer for my current F34, is now in use by the dealer himself as a 'dogcar' as he calls it. He uses it to go to the forest with his dogs, as he does not mind this car getting al dirty as much as his own.
