Which car? The 6 GranCoupe is out and I've sat in it. I think we can both agree that a 4GC will be even smaller, so if I can't fit in the back of the 6 I'd say it's safe to assume I also won't fit in the back of the 4.

I think the GranCoupes are great cars, I was just pointing out that there's still a market for a full sized sedan which I would personally prefer to a GC.

Looks great, but....they should not sell this and 3er, or at least prices and engines should be completely different, I guess.

Agreed. I was just beginning to like the idea of launching the 4 series platform, but having the Grand Coupe introduces complexity that as an enthusiast, I find confusing (don't see a clear need). I can only imagine what it will be like for a new buyer with less familiarity with the BMW offering. How would a dealer describe the difference between a 3 series and a 4 series gran coupe? In my mind, A 4 series GC a 4-door car that has a sporty look. I thought that was the purpose of a 3 series to begin with.

I guess we'll wait to see how they position it. Right now I see the purpose for a 6GC, but not the 4GC.

Now we're going to have an M4 gc. That's too much. M cars are going to be less and less exclusive.

Don't think so. Look at 5 series and 6GC, 6GC is smaller inside in my opinion.

That's really not the best analogy because while their printed menu is kept simple, they also have their secret menu with many other options on it.

Because they're building more slightly-different-looking same-old-same-old models at the expense of offering us a more diverse lineup of engine and transmission combinations in the existing vehicles people already want?

Not saying it's a bad business decision, it might well be that the badge whores are upset to spend so much on a sedan and see 50 of the sedan every day, and wonder "why didn't I just buy an appliance car?" So instead they want to buy something "more exclusive" and "slightly more swoopy-looking" so they only see 20 of the same car every day... which might, in turn, drive sales. *shrug*

But I think there are a lot enthusiasts on these kinds of forums who *actually enjoy the cars for what they are* and don't particularly care if other people have the same-looking car.. and would prefer the diverse engine and transmission combinations I mention.

So that's why you see whining here about a decision that might actually play well for the mass market as a whole.

This could be the best shaped BMW I`ve seen in past few years! Coupe looks amazing, but this is class above.

I hope OP don't mind that I`ve used his photo for color manipulation. I hope you like picked color palette!

My thoughts exactly. My first thought when I saw the rendering was "okay with this baby out, who the hell would buy a three series?!?" Guess its logical to assume the price/engine differences would stop the cannibalization of the 3er... but still I will wait and watch to see what happens. Wonder how the sales numbers will be.

That's sort of a bad analogy. Not only does In n Out have a "secret menu" (aka more exclusive, hahaha) but also if BMW kept their model line-up simple, they would continue to be successful, BUT small. They aren't as big as Daimler, Fiat-Chrysler, VW AG, etc. It's ONLY BMW, Rolls-Royce and Mini which are owned by Beemer, unlike VW or Daimler which own myriad brands that span nearly every price range and market. The only thing stopping BMW from being bought up by, say Volkswagen (shudder) is their business strategy.
This is why they're expanding the hell out of both BMW (activehybrids, FWDs, GCs and GTs, etc) and Mini (what with their SUV and their upcoming 5-door). BMW cannot remain small, otherwise they'll be bought out. Is it diluting their brand? Who cares? Does it really matter? They'll survive and not be bought out.
I've said it before on other forums, I'll say it again. Look at Porsche. They've done things that have been considered diluting, and even sacrilege to the Porsche brand (a 4-door, an SUV, the Boxster) since the late 90s and early 2000s. And look at how damn masterfully good the 991 is. This type of strategy gives BMW more money to invest into the things that matter to us enthusiasts (the ///M brand) and also gives them more market share, entailing survival.

Folks sure do have their panties in a bunch....if you don't like it, don't buy it. Seems simple enough, yes?

I thought more options and variety was always a good thing. About the whole "cannibalizing sales argument", I'm pretty sure BMW doesn't care where the sales come from, as long as it increases revenue and makes more money for their share holders.

With that said, these renders look VERY nice. BMW looks like they're going balls to the wall right now, which will make for an interesting decision for consumers like myself who will be looking in the 55-65K range in the next 24 months or so.

I need 4 doors, second kid showed up last month No doubt the 335is is a nice, quick car.. I almost bought one myself before I bought my E92 M3 last year. But the AH3 (just like a 4GC) feels about 10 years newer than the E9x gen, with cameras, HUD, new Navigation, etc. And ~50% of my time behind the wheel is spend in heavy stop-and-go Dallas traffic. So 35mpg+ was very appealing to me. Not to mention, I got the AH3 for ~$1K more than the 335i I was about to pull the trigger on. Cheap gas + short supply of 335i + Eco-credits means AH3 is very cheap right now....
Perfectly logical, and thanks. But admit it...it hurt like hell to sell that M3, didn't it. And wish I could have the HUD on mine. Hate that they don't offer it on the ecologically insensitive 3's. Good luck with the AH3.

regarding the canibalization of the F30 notes, I would guess that BMW will only offer the 4er GC in a top engine models, ie a 435GC and the M4 GC, so there will be no 'cheap' 4er GC to potentially impact F30 sales. If you've read up on how they plan to market the car, it wont be a stripped down model, it will be made as an exclusive model where it may very well be the case that the "base" GC car is nicely optioned at MSRP, similar to what they did with the 6er, so you dont have the option to compare it to say a base 328i. It will be a niche car for sure and will surely cost more than most 5ers - but so was my previous F30 335i at nearly $65K out the door. I think the renderings look OK, but would hope that it is more radical than just the 4er coupe with 4doors once released.

The M3 was a fun car, for sure. It didn't hurt too bad, mainly because I sold it for ~$5K less than I paid. Hard to beat that, considering I had it for a year. And I'm really looking forward to all the tech toys on the AH3, so it should be plenty of fun.

What's with all the comments the 4 Series Gran Coupe cannot comfortably accommodate passengers in the back seat, and it's not as practical as full size sedan. Do not recall the promo copy suggesting 4 Series Gran Coupe is a comfortable full size family automobile it's a sports sedan.

then again i don't really like the A7 either or the A5 sportback. I might just be weird.

The cannibalizing sales thing, BMW for sure doesnt care. The grancoupe will sell for more than the F32, and that is massive profit margins. I mean if you take a 5 series, put new sheetmetal on it and sell it for $25k more, the margins on that other $25k are great.
