Comparing different options for more sound

Hello Everyone,

I recently got my first BMW (2017 BMW 440i xDrive Coupe) and just to say the least it is amazing! I wanted to ask you guys about some of the different options we have for sound.

To start off, I really like the MPPSK! I have about 9 or so months of warranty left and am really considering pulling the trigger on it. Been getting some good prices too which should keep me right at or under 3000 installed with chrome tips. I don't mind the cost of the MPPSK since it seems like you're getting a lot of value and seems like no one regrets it either on these forums! But would you guys say I would be better of going with a Remus or another aftermarket exhaust?

I also read on these forums that many others simply recommend catless downpipes and tune? Perhaps a mid pipe, intake, among other things?

*Just a heads up* I don't care much for that more power, although, it would be nice, I definitely am going more for sound, crackles, pops, burbles!

If you care about warranty, MPPSK is a no brainer. If you don't, it is ultimately pricey (but not outrageous) for the gains.

Depends a lot on what you value most and how much you want to spend:

1. MPPSK - stays within warranty, new tune, nice exhaust, about $3k
2. Combination of tune, exhaust, downpipe, other bolt-ons (e.g., midpipe, intake) - allows for a lot more power, different exhaust note, more customizable, potentially cheaper (as in tune, dp, catback plus for $3k), doesn't stay within warranty

MPPSK is pricey, but no one ever dared to doubt its qualities. The tune might be "mild" in comparison to others out there, but it is 100% safe and will not void your warranty. On top, you get a state of the art straight-pipe, valved exhaust. To me - a no brainer. The sound is spot on as well. In my opinion there is rarely ever as successful product as that! They literally hit the sweet spot with it. Sadly it has already been discontinued in Germany due to new regulations. Get it while you can.

This said- if you want even more power and you want it already now - you may want to go a different route, thus sacrificing your warranty.

The cheapest route to more volume and performance would be a non resonated midpipe, catless DP, and aftermarket tune. Close to 400 whp and, if you are patient and buy used, about $1000-1200. If you bought it all new you're still at maybe $1400-1500.

Thanks everyone for the input, and although I agree for the money it may be a better alternative to go for catless downpipes mid pipe and tune route, it seems the more I hear about MPPSK the more I want to settle for that as power is not a huge deal for me but sound definitely is!

I may go with catless downpipes after warranty with the MPPSK for even more sound, I really appreciate everyones input!

Seeing as you like the burbles and pops I'd recommend going with a catless downpipe. I've seen countless destroyed cats from burbles.

It will also give you a much deeper and throatier tone.

Was just about to ask this! I wonder how BMW manages this...The MPPSK lets off some pretty intense "Gunshots", how has BMW not been swarmed with melted cats.

I'm guessing it has to do with how the program it. I know mine wont let me constantly burble. After about two pulls of gunshots it cuts off and takes a bit of time before it will let me do it again. I guess thats their way of monitoring heat in the cat

REMUS sounds better than MPPSK

Its also warranty friendly so no worries about that. High flow downpipe will add even more sound. I recommend you start with REMUS and decide on the downpipe later.

The tune does not add any sound to the car but a flash tune can increase the burble.

So from my understanding and correct me if I'm wrong but I read somewhere on the MPPSK forum that you have 8 years of catalytic converter warranty so even if the MPPSK does that it would be covered?

I was also interested in the Remus! Because it has the valve exhaust functionality as the MPPSK does? But I wasn't really able to get a side by side comparison of how they sound

Also it seemed like the Remus plus a tune of some sort would be required for the burbles no? (End up being a similar price to MPPSK?) As compared to the MPPSK which has the mild tune and exhaust for all the burbles and pops?

REMUS keeps the valves, its got a deeper tone than MPPSK with no drone

You get the burble sound with a more flowing exhaust. That being said, I suggest pairing it with a flash tune like boomtmod3 to make the burble louder

I understand, how are the burbles gunshots with just the Remus Catback?

I was worried that bootmod3 would be detectable and if I wanted to get louder burbles and gunshots that I would end up ruining the cat so I would have to void warranty near term for catless downpipe?

With stock cats and no tune, burble is very quiet.

If you use Bootmod3 default setting, the burble will not be too aggressive for your cats.

I understand that is helpful; so it seems with an aftermarket exhaust and tune would be more beneficial than the MPPSK after warranty due to how customizable it is

I'm thinking MPPSK for now and then catless dp + tune after my warranty expires next year

The catless DP and tune will sound amazing with the MPPSK valved exhaust. It is the best of all worlds IMO.

Yes. Apparently most tunes have that safety feature and if the exhaust gas temp reaches certain threshold, the pops and bangs are cut off. I learned that just recently as well whilst enquiring whether it is normal that my pops and bangs disappear completely after some sporty driving.

Although stated already, I'll say it again - the MPPSK exhaust alone is worth it either way. I don't know about the Remus, never seen or heard it, but personally - I don't care either. This is just how good the MPPSK is. It was developed, designed and manufactured as a standalone project by a specialised British company, based on requirements from BMW. And they did a fantastic job. You can always get more sound but I think it is a fine line between sounding aggressively good and sounding like a teenage eBay "tuner".
