BMW 320i ED N13 turbocharger metallic noise
Hi everyone !
I have this BMW 320i ED (Efficient Dynamics) manufactured in 08/2014 with 158.000 km on board with an N13 1598 cmc TwinPower Turbo engine (170 HP) under the hood. I have noticed this winter that after the engine is warmed up (after about 10 - 15 minutes from Start), a random metallic click noise starts from the turbocharger when idle. The weird thing is that the noise is present only when I switch to EcoPro mode. In the other 2 modes (Comfort, Sport) the metallic noise can never be heard. Here is my VIDEO record link where you can hear the click metallic noise at seconds: 1, 3, 16 (twice), 43(twice). https://streamable.com/5c64v So it's completely random. My guess is that in Eco Pro Mode the turbocharger is cooling, the metallic sheet that covers the turbo is stretching back and that's where the metallic noise comes from. This is my theory but I am not sure. When I switch back from Eco Pro to Comfort or to Sport the noise disappear. PS: the recording is done at 4 degrees Celsius. Any opinion about this click metallic noise is very welcomed. Thanks in advance. |

2013 F30 335i xdrive, dancing on 3 pedals
Stockish, muffler delete, mild body upgrades 107k miles, driving it since under warranty at 33k miles. Under OEM warranty -Washer fluid reservoir replaced -HVAC fan noise After OEM warranty -replaced coils and plugs every 20-30k (FCP FTW) -fuel pump replaced as bmw customer care -oil filter housing seal and oil cooler seals replaced around 65k -around 70k, turbo was dying and replaced for free under some fuel economy warranty (otherwise i had already lined up a pure stage 2) ---along with turbo, also replaced fuel injectors, plugs, & coils; the injectors were causing white smoke at random intervals so I replaced the coils &plugs afterwards -------along with all that, the BMW dealer cracked or aggravated an existing crack in the charge pipe, so i upgraded to a metal charge pipe -didnt have to replace pads rotors until 80k -replaced a few key fob batts Besides the injectors and turbo taking a dump all together, everything has been manageable, although maintenance is definitely present. My only real concern mechanically is the VANOS stuff, but I could easily see this motor/chassis going to 200k miles. Last edited by Surreal Innovations; 01-09-2020 at 01:12 PM.. F30 n26 sulev
Have a 328Xi, 2013 F30 with the SULEV engine, around 67K miles.
Problems: Complete Engine replacement! (currently happening as I type). Had the drivetrain malfunction warning, shut car off, turned it on, warning came back about a mile later. this time car wouldn't start. No prior warnings, no alarms in system. Auto shop diagnostics show no codes, Engine had extremely low compression, engine had very low oil pressure apparently for some time (service had been done on time, and no warnings) they stripped engine, found loose timing, damaged timing pins? Damaged valves......just a real mess. Dealership is standing behind the brand and the whole thing is being taken care of by BMW. when I get a list of everything that has been replaced I'll post it, but as of yesterday they had ordered in excess of $10K worth of parts including the new engine. Going to post a write up of the issue, autoshop I used and the dealership as well as the fix and parts replaced as soon as I can! the dealership said it's a warranty replacement (I don't have an extended warranty but I'm not arguing) |

The timing chain warranty was extended to 70k miles/7 years so that's probably why the dealership said so and the job was covered by BMW.

2016 320i. 40,000km. Changed spark plugs under warranty. That’s it! The car’s been really reliable. I still can’t believe this is BMW. So good!! Minor things like door lock knobs rattles. Fixed under warranty. Back in 2001 I bought 1996 320i. It had 40,000km. That car was nothing but troubled. The worst bmw ever. All electrical problems and finally it died on me and sold it the next day

2013 328i xdrive, 84k miles. Had it since 62k. Oil changes every 5k. Horn stopped working last year but got replaced.
Other usual things it was time for that had to be changed: brake pads, rotors, tires. Only thought in back of my mind is the timing chain issue otherwise great car. |

2014 320xi now at 101k miles purchased new. Coil 3 died out during spark plug change. Everything running smoothly otherwise. They were out of stock on 3 more coils that I plan to replace in the upcoming weeks. This way I have a new set of 4. |

At 198K miles as of this week. 200K will come before the end of this month.
Serviced the trans, both axles, and the transfer case at 180K. Swapped struts and springs for a 1" drop (Dinan and Bilstein) and added CC plates. Upgraded to CarNaviPlayer afer my factory iDrive quit (for the 3rd time). Engine still runs super strong - slight tick at idle from valvetrain, but otherwise perfect. Still running BM3 Stage2 93 and all the other upgrades. Planning to install Snow Perf water/meth kit as soon as the weather breaks. Got rear ended, so I have a nice new bumper :-) Had a 2020 330i as a loaner and my 320ix beat it every time we raced - from a stop, from a roll, from 60 MPH. And it outhandles that plush sled too. Gotta say, I was not impressed by the new model. The cluster no longer has even one real gauge - EWWW!

Wow, that's quite some driving! Other than the intervals mentioned above, did you do the ATF change before 180k? What are your OCIs and spark plug change intervals?

2013 328i service
My 2013, at about 80,000 miles, has had a couple glitches. The horns both failed - and I almost never use the horn. The drivers door unlock mechanism failed - got to where it was very fussy, requiring multiple attempts to unlock the door. And the driver side taillight refuses to stay in place. Every week or so it delatches from the trunk lid and sticks out a quarter inch. All of these issues were out of warranty.
The drivetrain has been pretty trouble-free. I replaced the spark plugs at ~60,000 miles, and the battery when it was about seven years old. Since I ran out of free service I change the oil every 10,000 miles. About to replace the drive belt just based on age. Brake pads still look good. Every so often the entertainment system gets in a funk. Becomes unresponsive to any button presses. Usually turning the car off and back on fixes it - just like rebooting a Windows PC. The ATF should be done every 60K miles if you ask ZF (maker of trans) which I learned at around 100K. As was stated BMW says its a lifetime fill, but that's too good to be true. So I did one service at 100, another at 120, and then again at 180K; all in an effort to get back on track. So far trans has been like a rock. Even used Bimmercode to enable to better shifts and it just takes it. I am not a believer in servicing the coil packs. The plugs were done at 60k (dealer), 120k (indy), and 185k (myself, along with new turbo). Changed coils at 185K but they never missed a beat, so I kept them as spares.
