I'm definitely looking forward to it! Still love and will keep the F30 for a while but would like to see BMW come out with something new to combat the other new releases.

What would you choose in this class of car? The only option with an MT is the A4. Not the sportiest offering in this market segment.

It’s a damn shame that all the automakers are ousting the MT. Life isn’t about 0-60 times

Thanks. That does not bode well for the G20 but I hope I'm wrong.

But it is about demand and cost of certification.

"No 6MT in this one, no 6MT in that one." Come on guys, is this even remotely surprising? If you are really looking for that 'connected' driving experience, why even go for a new BMW anyway? Its a soft, synthetic, computer on wheels. Plenty of E46 and E90's out there with manual transmissions, bone crushing suspension and brick heavy steering for like five to twelve thousand dollars to satisfy your enthusiast desires.

Side note, I don't like the particularly Asian looking headlights but otherwise, it looks like an F30, basically. BMW can't wait to announce the revolutionary move of offering Apple Car Play as a now cost option, like VW did with the Jetta, like 3 years ago. Digital dash? Sweet, Audi beat you to it. If they are smart they will make the interior more like the current 5 series. I saw a 540i at the gym the other day with the windows down so I got a good look at the interior and Jesus, that is a nice interior.

It's because car enthusiasts are very retro. Older is always better. Save the manuals!

Can you imagine if we applied this thinking to other technologies?

Save the VHS! Save the eight track! Save the Abacus!

I don't know about you guys, but if Apple doesn't release a dial, landline option for the new iPhone, I won't be interested.

It's not surprising. That's not the point. Are you saying we can't complain about this? Why are we here? Why are you here?

You all act like it's so displaced just because technology is advancing.

How many audiophiles prefer vinyl? So many complain about sound degredation over aux, bluetooth, etc. But all of those are the latest technologies.

Folks spend countless dollars on old school cameras, game systems, etc. because that's what you do when you have a hobby. You buy what you like and maintain it.

Fact of the matter is the direction OEMs are going isn't for the hobbyist or enthusiast, because the enthusiast doesn't make up most of their consumer base. But when a car like the M2 or GT4 are designed specifically for that crowd, the manual sells like crazy. And the execs have admitted that they can't ignore the trend in that market.

So in reality, we may be in the minority of general consumers but it should be no surprise that the market is still there. We just wish we didn't have to go buy a racecar or jdm tin can on wheels to enjoy these things on a daily commute.

I literally come on Bimmerpost everyday and hope to see they finally revealed the new 3 series. I have a 2013 328i xDrive with 86,000 miles that I got for a great price. And I really want to mod engine wise, but I'm scared of the dreaded "high mileage bmw problems".

Intake, wheels and coding is all I've done

There’s many cases where older tech is better than newer tech, until the newer tech improves. When CD’s were first introduced there were limitations with the technology which caused a lot of “retro” love for vinyl records. Now that digital audio technology has improved by leaps and bounds it’s become much more accepted.

Look at digital in film and the “soap opera effect” to see another oddity of new tech not being accepted, except in this case not due to limitations on the tech but on emotional objections. Objectively 48+ fps is better, but to eyes raised on analog film it looks weird and artificial. My plasma tv is super old tech, but to my eyes I prefer it to modern LCD/LED sets.

With your iPhone example, some people with an iPhone X who have issues with facial recognition might actually prefer to have a fingerprint-sensing home button.

I think manual transmissions are actually a different case altogether, not a matter of old vs new tech at all. Old vs new tech in transmissions to me is more like SMG vs the double-clutch iterations. Or automated manuals vs automatics. In those cases the level of human interaction is the same, whereas with a manual it’s a completely different model.

If some people prefer to row their own gears, more power to them. I’ve been jonesing after a manual Porsche for decades but keep buying automatic 3-series. Doesn’t mean I’m a luddite, just that I see value in the manual transmission experience and will get there one day when the time is right. Hopefully before all manuals completely disappear.

No Laser Lights in NA

But ambient lighting and iDrive 7 UI and digital displays are remarkable.

I think its going to be an interesting car. Look, BMW isn't going to put a piece of junk. Its customer base is a pretty savvy bunch of consumers. BMW knows what sells well in the US...they have it down as a science. Just my opinion...so please don't chop off my head!

BMW will have to fix the rampant amount of creeks and rattles in the new generation before I ever considering buying another 3 series. My 2016 has at least twice as many rattles than any other car I've ever owned in my life -- including an old 2002 Elantra that I drove for over 10 years. It makes your "new car" feel like a total piece of junk. It's embarrassing to even give people rides in my car. BMW is shooting themselves in the foot -- not only might I not buy another BMW because of this, but I'm sure anyone who rides in my car will never buy a BMW either.

Official launch at the Paris motor show in October, although I wouldn't be surprised if the actual photos leak or get leaked by BMW prior to that.

6mt F30 stikes the best balance for me between driving enjoyment and practicality. Take out the driving enjoyment lost by going to 8at and I'd get more total enjoyment out of a vehicle far on the practicality side of things that can enable me to go places and do stuff my F30 can't. And the Tacoma would be 6mt too.
Is rowing your own so enjoyable that it makes a pick up truck better to drive than a well sorted sport sedan with one of the better auto transmissions available? I'm not trying to be disagreeable, just trying to understand where you're coming from. I mean, I understand wanting to select your own gears at any given time, but the 8at works fairly well in manual mode too. At least in sport+ I've not found it to be intrusive. I suppose if you've only ever driven manuals, I can see being put off by autos.
