Well that was a day

Cruising down the M25, probably only doing 40, lorry tries to go from third to second lane and pushes me, then suddenly I’m spinning round and end up with my arse in the central reservation. One witness stopped and have got details. Lorry driver apologised, police came. BMW emergency services got the car towed and me back home. Have a 320d from Enterprise for a few days.

All of driver side damaged, plus two alloys, plus back left quarter completely smashed. Just valued car on WBAC, £20,000. Wondering now whether it will get fixed or not. Have Gap insurance

Tried to upload pictures but too big. Will certainly need two new doors, bodywork to one front and back wing, new back section and some work on the metal underneath, 2 alloys repaired, wing mirror.

Repairable for £20,000 etc. Or will it be a write off?

Sorry to hear this, at least it was just metal and plastic that got hurt!

If you get the bimmerpost app you can upload any size photos easily, just go in the settings and increase the upload resolution first.

Sorry to hear this must have been a scary experience.

Difficult to say without pictures. However, from the extent of damage you’ve described I’d suggest that it sounds like it’s a write off given the amount of work needed, especially if there is any chassis / suspension damage.

At least you are safe and well.

My first accident ever was being hit by a lorry on the M25. Sounds similar to yours, lorry changed lanes and caught me with his trailer sending me into a coned off lane. Lorry didn't stop.

Whatever happens with the car, it's only metal and plastic and you have insurance and Gap.

Glad to hear that no-one was hurt.

From what you describe my guess is that the car will be written off if it's a BMW repair as we know their prices aren't cheap.

Glad to hear you got out safe and that they took quick responsibility.

Good that you have gap too - I'd honestly prefer to have it written off in your circumstance...

Written off

Well my lovely 440i GC with MPPSK is no more. Written off as repairs came to £23000. Insurance company have offered £25,750 which as I paid £39,000 for it 2 3/4 years ago and it’s done 36,000 miles, doesn’t seem too bad.

Not sure what happens next with GAP. Do they just make up the difference between £25,750 and £39,000 or do they pay the price it would cost now?

Seems to leave me in quite a good position though.

Depends if you had return to invoice gap (will give you the difference between what insurance pay and what you paid for the car) or replacement gap (will pay the difference between insurance payout and what a new equivalent will cost). If you have replacement gap you’re in for some big bucks!

Depends if you have back to invoice or replacement gap. But yeah they make up the gap to £39k minimum.

Yes Replacement GAP is the only one to get, for a few extra £'s.

Wouldn't touch Return To Invoice as the more discount you got when you bought the car, the less payout you will get come claim time!

Sorry to hear that, but be thankful you came out ok. Don't worry about the payout, you've got the gap so whatever happens you shouldn't be in a negative. Hope it all turns out alright for you mate.

Scary experience no doubt. Pleased to hear you are safe and well. Also well done for taking GAP out. So many people think it will never happen to them. And thankfully it won't. But you just never know. Enjoy choosing your next new car.

Replacement Gap. So does that mean I will get another £25000 to bring it up to £50000 which is about what it would cost now.

If so, I might be very happy.

But what to get next???

I’d only heard about GAP from this forum and got a discount for being a member.

Glad you are okay. Sad the car is a write off and after looking more into the gap insurance it seems I got the wrong idea. I thought it would just assist in covering the difference in getting you back in a same spec car. I didnt realise that it would basically rewind time to when you purchased the car and you'd get what you bought even if it's 2 years after you purchased it.

One decent write off could really cover your arse on a car with massive depreciation.

Buy M5, get gap.
2 years into ownership "accidentally" smash it into a wall or something writing it off.
Buy brand new M5.
:O

Yes this is insurance fraud but I really didnt think it'd work like that. I thought they'd just guarantee that when your insurance company value your car at XYZ amount but a real replacement is £3k more the gap would just cover that.

I paid 23k cash for my 2013 F31 (in 2016). I took out return to invoice GAP, if I get a write off before Sept 19 (by which point I will have put 100k miles on it) I will be quids in

Sorry to hear that your 440i GC has been written off. At least you're fine and having GAP is a sensible thing.

Who did you buy your GAP insurance from? I'm sure others will be keen to hear your experience with the claim process as insurance companies are only ever as good as their claim handling process.

Good luck on the search for a new motor, nice position to be in!
