The 1M falls into a different category in my opinion. It is more of a "cool" car vs a "beautiful" one. Not in a bad way though, it is in good company as I consider Lotus Exiges, Z3M, Gumpert Apollos, etc all to be "cool" cars.

Some interesting ideas about beauty here, and some people are unclear on when the 3.0CS was made (the 60s was the less attractive 2000CS).
70s: The 3.0CS, pre-1973. Excellent lines, beautiful interior, fantastic greenhouse. 80s: The E24 6-series. Beautiful elegant shape, surpassed only by the Porsche 928S4 of the period. 90s: The E38 7-series. The perfect clean, understated luxury sedan. 00s: The E86 Z4 coupe - far and away the most successful Bangle-era exterior design, and the interior has an engaging retro-minimalist look to it. Not as derivative as the Z8 or Z3, but a completely modern interpretation of a classic segment - the 2-seat sports car. The runner up would be the E92 - elegant flowing lines, luxurious but non-distracting interior, the car flows across the eye. |

oh come on, +1 on the Nazca. That was an AWESOME car, wtf guys.
Why is the M1 not mentioned in this? Why are we only talking about mass production cars? Here's my pic from the BMW Museum visit two months ago - I'm sorry, but this has to figure SOMEWHERE in this list :P

I agree the M1 was a beautiful car ahead of its time. I remember one day while stationed at Bitburg and driving down to Trier I happened upon three M1's on the back of a lorry.

Glad my thread invoked so many responses. Agree or disagree it doesnt matter. Automotive beauty is as subjective as all beauty. Ask anyone where they would go on vacation, and you will get ocean (mine), mountain, forest, desert, city, country, Bangkok, Vegas . Its all good! I like surfboard racks on my M3.
