Winterkorn in front of the board tonight, I can just imagine them walking around shouting €25 billion lost in two days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you even begin to explain that....

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall on some of the conversations as this became real..

Say that again.....

We did what? How many cars? In the US?!.....oh shit!

Lol I refer you to my Fuehrer thread

Seriously though, this could have some major ramifications for Germany.

Can VW weather the storm and law suits, costs of rework to whatever number of cars need sorted.

Then can VW still honour company pensions and payments, what other pension / investment firms have just had 35% knocked of their VAG shares.

If this does bounce out to BMW and Mercedes, Germany will need to desperately unload its refugees - those from VW.

I love that film it's in my top ten, Bruno Ganz puts in a fine performance.

They did test an X5 diesel as well (the same people who tested the VW and found out what was going on) and it performed better than the official claims in some circumstances, although that would explain why the BMW CEO fainted on stage last week!

There is the tech to pass the test honestly but it costs more and I think that is the nub of the issue VW choose to be clever instead, too clever.

I get the same issues in the business I work for, people trying to be clever saving a nickel today that ends up costing a dollar down the line.

SCR is definitely used by BMW in the US to achieve Bin 5. My query, is the NSC (NOx Storage Catalyst) system really good enough to not only pass EU6 over here, but also control NOx emissions in real world driving.

I'd like to see results of PEMS testing on something like the 330/335d.

Is this just symbolic of the VAG group.... Like soft touch plastics and damped grab handles, all about the shallow attributes of perceived quality rather than the true depth of engineering prowess?... As long as it looks like it does the job then that's all that's required...

Another 8% this morning already, which must be down over 40% since it started.
I can't decide if this is totally overblown or going to be one of the biggest corporate cock ups if all time.

Think it's falling firmly into the latter. The US will always err towards punitive measures to fire a warning shot across the bows of anyone else who might be tempted to stray off the straight and narrow. As such they've levied tens of billions in fines on the banking industry - given the environmental component here I can see them taking an even harder line.

Over and above that the damage to VW's reputation will be very significant given they've always played the quality card as the reason for customers buying their cars. How that plays through into their sales globally will be interesting to see over the coming months and years.

Yes I think the ongoing and wider reaching impact on future performance that is hard to quantify.
It will be interesting to see if the power of the individual brands helps them here. Realistically, is anyone NOT going to buy a Lamborghini, Bentley, Skoda, Audi because of this??

Agree but VW volumes are more than all of the other group volumes combined so will still hit them hard

The mega cheap Golf R lease deals will be back on soon if VW need to get a few cars sold.

So how is BMW getting NOx Storage Catalyst technology to work when VW failed?

A couple of work colleagues have cancelled their respective Audi and VW orders.

From chatting to one of them, the VW salesman was not surprised.

Admittedly, the reason for cancelling is more to do with future discounts from VW when they are down and begging, rather than his order before this all came to light.

Where did you read that, for that is the elephant in the room a healthy cashed up VW can probably pay/lawyer their way out of this but not if the sales collapse.

From what I have read they didn't fail, they just didn't want to spend the money on cars whose margins are typically very thin.

One of the financial papers I read.

VW have $18 billion in cash reserves.

Interesting fact. Apple have $200 billion in cash, held offshore
