Horrible metallic grinding noise

Evening all

I have got the most horrific sounding metallic rotational grinding noise coming from one of my wheels. This has happened previously and it was a stone caught between the disc and guard. However probing hasn’t released anything from the guard.

It’s worse when reversing or braking.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you could be metal on metal on one of your brake pads

Surely the I drive would have warned my of low pad material though?

Had the same sound on my Golf MK6 and the caliper had seized and eaten the brake pad. One expensive repair bill.

Have they been cleaned, repaired or replaced recently? Mine were cleaned a month before and then seized...very common problem apparently.

If you've got breakdown cover then call them out to look at it. They can take the wheel off and might be able to look further into the issue?

Sensor is only plugged in one side. It could be the other pad that has worn down past the friction material.

That could also indicate a bigger problem with the calliper itself as pads should wear evenly

From what I can see of the pad material, they look identical on both sides although admittedly you can’t see much

Could still be a trapped stone. They can make a horrific noise. Often worse in one direction.

I had this once on a Volvo where I drove through some saltwater flood water then parked the car 30 seconds later for 2 days.

There was an absolutely terrible grinding noise, brakes on or off, for a few hundred meters.

Doesn't really sound like your issue but maybe food for thought.
