Help, what’s this?

Hey guys,

Can anyone tell me what the pipe circled on the below pic is for? It’s on a 2013 316d

It comes off the air intake and connects to the air box but it seems a little pointless as it just joins up to the main pipe...

I’m looking to add a performance filter and intake but don’t know what to do about that pipe whether to block it off or get a little filter for it?

PS it’s an internet photo and not my actual engine, in case you were wondering about the smashed windscreen!

Thanks

It's called a vacuum line. A decent aftermarket induction kit will have an insert for this. I think the AfE one has an insert.

Which one are you thinking of? What's your engine size, fuel type and, state of tune?

If it's a diesel you will have no benefits from it other than the longevity between filter changes.

Why not a panel filter? Must it be a full on induction system?
I’d guess a 2013 316d...

Absolutely pointless mod on a diesel

You will almost certainly reduce the power by discarding the OE airbox and potentially cause problems with your MAF

Not being funny, each to their own and all that but...

Are you really considering tuning a 316d?

Why not just buy a 320d which can't be too much more and it'll have more power than you'll ever have in the 316d.

Thanks for the reply....

It’s a 2013 316d but it’s been re-mapped to 200bhp...

I’ve built a cold air intake and incorporated the maf into it and used a proram filter...happy with the outcome and it gives off a nice ‘woosh’.

What exactly does the vacuum pipe do? I’ve placed a small filter on the end of it for now.

Cheers

I have no idea. Something to do with the vacuum system likely.
