GL5 in Differential
My understanding (Limited) is that yes a GL-5 oil will work in our differentials because the temps don't exceed a threshold where the GL-5 oil would start to potentially damage internal soft metal parts (brass) or others. Therefore, a GL-5 oil is acceptable.
Although - the BMW OEM oil is GL-4 Hypoid . FCP Euro video where they use OEM Fluid state that a GL-4 oil from other brands like Redline is good and probable better at protecting the differential. I went round and round and ending up going OEM fluid -- even though I believe that OEM fluid was updated in 2011-2012 to a thin viscosity fluid for an ounce of fuel savings. The differential did not change only the fluid GL-5 to GL-4. In a final word FCP Euro video says he wants to use what came in the car as does Kies Mortorsports on his own F-Series -- went OEM. |
