440 xdrive suspension

I recall when I bought my 435 m sport that the m sport suspension was removed when the car was xDrive. So I added DHP and was told it helps a little

Now in market for maybe a 440 m sport. Do they still delete the m sport suspension with xdrive? I think I read that on here again. Does track package add it back? Do I just need a 440 non xDrive with track? I will not track my car I just like a tight suspension with little roll. I feel my 435 has too much roll

F30 xDrive always use base suspension. No msport, no m perf. So yes, xDrive deletes m sport suspension and track handling pack will not change it

I just got a 430 GC xDrive (F36) and I have noticed that the ride is much firmer and "BMW Like" than my 328 xDrive Sports Wagon (F31). Both have base suspensions without DHP.
I believe I remember that when they did the LCI on the 4 Series they "stiffened up" the base suspensions and I believe (from my observations) that it carried over to the xDrive cars as well.
I suggest you test drive a new 440 xDrive and see what your "seat of the pants" tell you.

2018 4 series features an overall improved suspension across all variants.

Also like your 435 xdrive the 440 xdrive features softer springs than a rwd msport car so getting the m adaptive suspension will be the sportiest variant of the xdrive car. Not quite as tight as rwd but if you want awd it's the the best option.

Not sure if you can wait or not but this clash will be gone in the next gen chassis where, like the new 5, xdrive and rwd will feature the same suspensions.

FWIW. I found dinan anti roll bars made a big difference on my 320x. Didn't find the need on my coupe.

It's best to schedule a test drive and learn if the suspension behavior meets your preferences. There are always third party solutions (coilovers) to provide an even better suspension behavior.

I agree on the test drive but I like to know what I am testing driving before I show up. I bet many CAs don't even realize the suspension question.

Thanks everyone.

Try reaching out to local dealers and ask them if there are 2 vehicles with stock with ...

- 440i xDrive
- 440i xDrive with M Adaptive suspension (recommended)

Why do you need M sport suspension with x-drive? X-drive drivetrain is so much different from RWD on many levels. You don't need sport suspension with x-drive because you drive completly different trough bends. X-drive has understeering and RWD oversteering in bends. Try both on closed road better.

I have a 440i GC xDrive with both the M packages so exhaust, extra hp, suspension, brakes etc. I honestly don't think it's bad at all! And I went to it from a F80 M3 so I know what I am comparing. I actually like the ride quality of the 440 better is it's not as stiff in the suspension and doesn't send the potholes through your back like the M3 did.

unfortunately, adding M sport suspension to the xDrive is not a possibility. just add Dinan performance springs - 1 inch lower and tighter overall feel, relatively inexpensive too.

That would be awesome if they offered it. Last time I talked with them they were open to offering it but were in need a donor car to get the proper setup.

Close to placing an order on a 440i Coupe (non Xdrive)

Adding track package takes away M Sport suspension and replaces with Adaptive M Suspension. I understand what AMS is but in sport mode it is similar to the plane M sport suspension?

No. It changes only the shocks, not the springs (might be a bit lower than standard xDrive springs, but not msport springs.)

This is not quite accurate, at least on MY18 U.S. cars.

RWD 440s with the M Sport Package include M Suspension. AWD 440s with the M Sport Package do not. However, both RWD and AWD 440s add Adaptive M Suspension with the Track Package, although the AWD cars with the Track Package still sit higher than the RWD cars.

Correct. But as other posters have said, only by adding the Dinan bits will you get to the suspension feel of the RWD cars. Unfortunately, it comes with a price. I had had a 440 xDrive on order, but after realizing how much it would cost in aftermarket parts to get the level of handling performance we're looking for, I ultimately decided to just go with an M4. I'm not happy about giving up AWD capabilities, but it ended up being a financial decision because on resale, I'd never be able to recoup the costs of all the aftermarket parts.

I don't know why BMW continues to treat xDrive in the 3 series like a leper. My xDrive M235i has the same exact suspension (except the LCA's) as the RWD version. Same dampers, springs, ride height, you name it.

It's actually one the reasons I bought it after owning an xDrive E92 & F30 because for once you could get the same identical car (less the 6MT) with RWD or xDrive. There's no excuse for it really.

That's been the $65 question for the last two chassis, lots of theories but regardless the m performance line (starting with your m235) was the first trend to reverse that. And now all future chassis should share the same suspension xdrive or not

Right, but even with Track Handling Package + xDrive the Adaptive M Suspension is basically the adaptive M dampers on standard springs. That's how it is on the 340i unless it's different on the 440i.

Yes, I think that's why the xDrive cars ride higher than RWD cars. I think that the 4er xDrives have shorter springs and sit lower than equivalent 3ers, but it is frustrating that we're all guessing about this stuff, with BMW supplying very limited information.
