Blown Charge Pipe - ISO aftermarket upgrade

Hello All,

Recently took a road trip across Tennessee and on my way home and my Charge Pipe blew up. Fortunately I had some gloves and duct tape in the car and was able to cruise in limp mode back to my local dealer to have it repaired under extended warranty. My 335i is a 2013 with only 30k miles but does have several performance modifications IE: MPPK, Exhaust, COI, Dinan Stage 2 software. I was running with Dinan software tuned off in EcoPro on I40 and just had down shifted at 65mph to pass a Tractor Trailer when it blew.

I did some research and found a lot of folks on here have reported this failure even on stock unmodified N55's and it's even more likely to happen when running with engine performance tuning. In fact my local dealer had informed me that they had repaired 4 other car with the same issue that week. Apparently the part is made of plastic and gets brittle where it fastens to the throttle body and becomes prone to failure.

This obvious weak point is guaranteed to fail again within 5 years and the quotation I had for repair without warranty coverage was $3700. I was wondering what after market solutions the folks on here are using to replace this weak stock part? My warranty coverage runs out in 2020 and I want to know good options are out there to replace this with when my warranty runs out.

Thanks!

There are many good aftermarket options to replace the plastic CP on N55 engines. Stopping short of a commercial endorsement, more information can be found at http://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-chargep...i-n54-n55.html

cfm56d7b,

I noticed VRSF Charge Pipe had very interesting blow off valve options but did not specifically say the fitment was compatible with F30's. Do you have any experience/content to share with us that show that it can fit without modification?

Thanks!

do your homework with VRSF. many threads and posts about qc, fit, finish on their charge pipes, intercoolers and downpipes. from the pics i've seen, the welding and materials at that chinese factory seems to be the worst. although it doesn't indicate the "absolute" quality of the product, to me, it does indicate what type of pride, or lack thereof, the company takes it their products.

you can also do ER, very high quality but costs 2x as much

lot of info in the N55 subforums, here...https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=421

ER chargepipe. Very high quality and no fitment issues.

Just had a VRSF CP fitted. Quality was great, no installation issues and no malfunctions yet, knock wood.

$3700 to replace a stock charge pipe? I think there's one extra 0 in there as that's about the asking price for stock pipe and then figure 1.5 hours labor.

You did pretty good with your stock charge pipe as the car has now been on the road for 6 years. Mileage is low but its the heat cycles and elevated boost that kills these things. Luckily there are many aftermarket solutions out there for around $300 and it will never blow again.

4 in 1 week (almost 1 a day) in same week at Tennessee Dealership.....and then there are those that claim that a blown CP only happens if you modify you car.

Smh

An ounce of prevention....

Not if the plastic parts of the exploded CP were sucked into the engine which is another issue when the plastic CP goes.

@ IK6SPEED and XutvJet,

The $3700 ($3764.48) was the estimated quoted repair cost on my warranty receipt paperwork from BMW of Nashville. Not sure if that is what a dealer would dare actually charge its customer for this repair. Actual cost paid was $54.63 after tax with the extended warranty. I will provide pictures upon request of the paperwork. I'm curious if anyone out there can provide information of their experience about what replacing one of these things out of warranty at the dealer actually costs.

Thanks!

And yet others tell you Extended Warranties are throwing away money, lol.

EW Companies do not dish out that kind of money without verifying the issue...going as far as to send out adjusters on figures like that. And then their are laws such as Insurance Fraud so very few Dealers would ever submit a false claim 10x the cost.

So obviously there was a lot more damage caused when the CP exploded and plastic was sucked into engine.

Wow, impressive yours lasted that long. I've blown mine 3 times. Unfortunately my dealer here won't install aftermarket parts and there are really no reasonably-priced their party installers where I am.

I have found that if you downshift while in relatively high RPMs, while accelerating, the stock pipe is gone. All three times mine blew is when I went to pass someone, changed into Sport + mode and immediately downshifted. This causes the boost to jump and the stock pipe can't handle the pressure (my unscientific and layman's opinion). My car is completely stock BTW. *shrugs.

There's a reason doctors ask you for "family" history.

Those are the things they are most concerned about.

Had that happen, and yes it is the downshifting during high rev.... BOOM / POP!

ER chargepipe for the win. High quality, fits great.

My F30 was my daily driver that I bought new and drove for 2 years when I lived in Germany. I drove it fast on those Autobahns over there. I moved to Japan for work and shipped the car to the US and now it only gets weekend driving and the occasional road trip when I'm home in Tennessee. I'm guessing I would have blown the CR in my third year of ownership if I had still been driving it daily.
