F@cking Car Tax is 450 sodding quid!

So maybe I wasn't paying attention. In my happy world I'd not noticed that anything over £40k is now taxed ar £450 a year.

With a 335d and an M2 thats £900 (I'm good at maths me)

And it's not even hypothecated so non if it goes to sort out sodding pot holes.

Grrr.

Just be happy you didn't buy a car at just under the threshold then spec a random 100 quid option to launch you into the Suoertax bracket

One advantage of having a slightly older car, just renewed my road fund licence at £155 for the year!

In fairness, though, the RFL implication of buying a car with a list price of over £40k has been highlighted in the media as well as on this and other forums; therefore, painful and arbitrary though it is, I wouldn't have thought the relatively large cost should be coming as a surprise....

Interestingly I was weighing up two AUC, one was the one I bought (a few grand over 40K) the other was 39990.

The 39990 had the same miles, less kit and was up for more because it was just under the tax....dealer told me as much and said they wouldn't reduce it for that reason...

These dealers, don't miss a trick...

The most annoying thing about this is the fact that a lot of us probably didn't pay 40k+ for the car. Shame list prices are so massively over inflated in comparison to what people actually pay.

I planned the order in Nov 16 to take a 1st March 2017 delivery for this very reason, the 340 is 170 ish road tax now. Beat it by a month and got the new reg at the time. Sorry am I coming over smug.

But I agree with others it may be annoying but if you're dropping near 40k on a car, the difference is minimal, my sentiment is always that's it's better in my pocket than theirs though.

It is a piss take. Can only assume the government wants to be seen to be giving the posh kids a spanking for being flash -yet helping the average Joe by letting go of the higher rate after 5 years.

It's stupid. I had to drop an engine size on my new order to get under the £40k mark. So not only did the government not get their £300 per year they didn't get the VAT on the higher purchase price or the fuel duty on the extra fuel I would have used or the additional insurance tax. Never in the history of government has there been a more retarded policy.

I agree, it is a piss take. It’s a huge hike in cost percentage from what it was, just hope with all the extra road funds collected that all the roads will soon be as smooth as The Mall leading up to Buckingham Palace. I’m doubting that though!

For those who have unlimited funds it’s not going to have any bearing; car enthusiasts will bite the bullet, moan, but pay it; other’s will shop sensibly and the car manufacturing industry will ultimately be affected.

I wish I had no interest in cars, it’d save me a fortune.

Accountants quote the 5 f’s, if it’s fast, floats, flys, or fucks, forget it, because it’ll cost ya!

Really? I wouldn't do that, some things are more important.

So you didn't want to spend and extra £5 a week in road tax to get a half decent engine?

What tax would you have then?

I have an old manual 3.2l Audi TT and that comes in at £500 a year due to emissions. The DSG is half that despite being worse fuel economy in the real world. Official figures say differently, and that's all that matters. Really annoying on a car worth under £10k.

Despite protestations from politicians to the contrary, the tax system isn't always fair and the change to RFL is another example of one which is entirely arbitrary and based on nothing other than an assumption that if you can afford a car with a list price of over £40k you can also afford to pay more tax. However, draconian though it is, its introduction was well publicised so I don't really have any sympathy for someone who bought a £40k+ car and is now complaining come RFL renewal time!

You were obviously aware of the change and made your purchasing decision accordingly but personally I wouldn't let the level of RFL dictate my choice of car. For example, I'd far rather have a 440i and pay the higher RFL than sneak under the £40k barrier and have to live with a 420i for 3 or 4 years. The extra RFL is peanuts in the context of running a £40k+ car and hence basing the whole purchasing decision around that is allowing the tail to wag the dog IMO...

i pay £295 for a 2002 Clio. Only do about 3k a year too. Still worth it to me though. I guess i could take it off the road over winter.
