Time for a new laptop. What to get?
Looks like it's going to be Lenovo or HP. I've got it narrowed down to a few
Lenovo Yoga 710 Lenovo Ideapad 510 or 700 Lenovo Flex 4 (15") HP Omen 15t or 17t HP Pavilion 17t HP Pavilion x360 Convertible Having a hard time picking one. Touch screen is nice, but don't really care at this point if something has everything except for that. Backlit keyboard is a must Obviously, I'm looking at 15" or 17" screen @ 1920x1080 & 8 GB RAM Has to have an HDMI port. Would be nice if it has a MiniDP as well. Looks like the i5 6200 is about the same as the i7 6500 so I don't care which one it has. Current laptop has 1 TB HD that is mostly full so a large HD would be nice. Dn't really want to have to worry about an external sitting on my lap w/the laptop Last edited by Never_Enough; 10-27-2016 at 02:50 PM.. |

archive off your data, nobody uses 1TB of data all the time(should be on RAID anyway) and get any business edition laptop. Lenovo/HP would be my preference.
Macbook Pro would be an option but I would wait until they refresh their hardware.

Just got my wife a new MacBook, very nice machine. I know the Mac haters will surface soon. We've been using Mac for years, they suit us. I like the fact that they don't need continual maintenance, defragging, virus scans etc.

MacBook Pro 512K SSD, 4K monitor, thunderbolt or USB3 RAID and use iCloud, Dropbox or AWS S3 for file you always need access to.
Already mentioned wait for refresh. |

Depends... Depends.... Do you want more power/memory/hdd space or just good light laptop. I had Samsung laptop at my work and it was realy good. Light , power enough for office but only 256 GB SSD which I recommend as faster and wont brake if dropped . It only had 8G ram but good enough. battery lasts for 8 h . same can be found from other manufacturers . Better have SSD with ext storage or some laptops offer both SSD for OS and regular for anything else.

I'm a real big fan of my Lenovo Yoga Pro. The gen 3 is a nice machine. Haven't looked lately to see if a 1+ tb solid state is an option and it'd be pretty neutered without Win 10 and the touch screen friendly OS, but it has a great footrpint, super light, fast, good battery life, etc.

Define why the Surface Book is a "true" desktop replacement and the MacBook Pro not.
Define what you mean by faster? Faster at what and why? Comparing Windoz and Macs by specifications only is like comparing a M4 and M2 and saying the M4 is faster b/c it has more HP. When we know it isn't faster on a track w/turns b/c we know races are won and lost in turns. Then look at the the advice in this thread. Yeah, buy a Windoz machine but don't use the latest OS. Really! That instill confidence. Sorry not bagging on you just Windoz. Then let's not forget... http://www.pcworld.com/article/31067...uncovered.html |

The hinge for the screen is fucked & it caused part of the side plastic to break off. |

My wife was IT director for a big fortune 500 company for years, hates PC's and loves her MacBook. They are a little different than PC, but I've had nothing but good luck with them, I think back to when I had PC's cause Mac was too expensive, and the time I spent on the phone with tech support, and all the virus headaches. All I'm suggesting is that you have a look, you might be surprised. Or not. Regardless, good luck with what ever you get. |

Nothing wrong with Windows 10...it is stable now as opposed to a year ago. I am sure you would like windows 7 but lets face it that OS is old and eventually will be unsupported so get in the mind set of Windows 10 now. With that being said, go to Dell and build yourself a nice Latitude notebook, they will stand the test of time. Dell builds great business class machines. I still have a Latitude from 7 yeas ago and it runs great (i did upgrade to a SSD a few years ago). From my mechanical engineering perspective this thing is built RIGHT! Plastic where acceptable and metal where there should be metal, around the hinge areas! No top deck flex of the keyboard, even feels well built.
