US Spec 328d, EGR valve

Got the transmission malfunction warning.. was fearing the worst (transfer case) but i ran the codes and it looks to be the EGR. Has anyone had experience with this? Should I clean it first before trying to replace it?

Thanks for any input.

Posting that you got codes but not listing them seems counterintuitive.

I added the codes part to imply that i already know it's the EGR.

Disconnect the EGR electronically and see if the codes change first. Any other codes from INPA/Rheingold ?

Also would be helpful to know year and mileage....again post more info that you think might be needed.

FYI your code is
"exhaust gas recirculation rate-control, control deviation: exhaust gas recirculation rate too high/negative rule deviation"

Not sure if this points to the valve itself, but logging some live values would help with diagnosis.

By the way, that code would NOT give you transmission malfunctions. I suggest digging deeper.

What tool are you using to diagnose?

I have very intimate (lol) knowledge of these cars, especially the wagon. All drivetrain and electronics... as my wagon is a bit special. I rescued it from Harvey flooding. Mild 4-6" of water sitting parked upwards on a driveway, but I still took everything apart. Everything.

I do electronics and tuning for fun, and love to wrench.

The FEM/ZGM code for lost Flexray sync is much more likely to have caused your transmission failsafe.

I had the same when I drove the wagon without the interior onto a lift, with disconnected airbag module. It pulled down Flexray and illuminated transmission faults and DSC faults. Cluster said trans failsafe mode.

Do you have custom equipment installed/retrofitted? I would think you need a flexray sync first. It will relearn all the installed modules.

Also, it would be very important to know the software version status of all the modules... I had a few errors that were caused by old software.

One such example, a particulate matter sensor issue. It was for 'particulate matter sensor clogged with soot' error (or thereabouts). Pulled sensor, it was cleaner than anything I have seen. Bought a used PM sensor ($50), and updated the whole car while waiting for it to arrive.

The update solved the error. So I have a spare PM sensor now. That was 5000 miles ago.

Awesome! Looking forward to having your knowledge around.

How did you self-tune your car?

I'll be around as much as I can.

Long story short about tuning it:
Learned diesel tuning on VW TDIs for about 4 years now on my own ALH Jetta and great knowledgeable contacts, then I learned BMW tuning on my gas cars with wonderful results.. then after getting the wagon 6 months ago, I spent 3 months discovering, defining, and researching. Had some help from very knowledgeable people.
Then pulled the dde out and got busy on bench.

Teaser from a few months back doubt they're accurate
Done more since.

Transfer case holding up oddly.

I have a 6wb and aftermarket seats. How do I do a flexray sync?

Tool32, INPA, or ISTA are the only ways I know. Not sure if Carly does it.

Do those errors come right back after clearing?
(Sorry for slight derail)

I have a '14 328d wagon with about 47k on it. I was getting an EGR code and driveline malfunction warnings. Took it to the dealer, CPO car so still covered. They replaced the EGR but couldn't find anything else wrong. The driveline warnings come and go. Since then about 800 miles, no more warnings.

We have received a few of the "Driveline Malfunction" notifications coupled with NOx and EGR valve codes. I'm also getting a coolant leak from somewhere behind the EGR cooler, so I'm pulling that stuff out today to clean the EGR and look at the coolant lines.

This is also a 2014 328d wagon.

I have things disconnected, just need to figure out the best way to pry the EGR vlave off. Mine seems to be on tighter than others I have seen.

I have a 2014 328d xDrive wagon. Had EGR fault. Tried to clean it up to no avail. I also just replaced the Aux transfer case. Now the dealer tells me my DEF line 16197260228 $289.00 CDN is leaking and the sensor needs replacing 18308514448 $ $396.00 CDN. I know the line is bad as they crimped that off. Parts are crazy expensive. Any hel on cheaper parts?

If you have a coolant leak, it's the EGR cooler. I had to replace mine at 90,000 miles +/-, 2014 F30 N47 engine. You will also notice an exhaust smell in the car. It will be difficult to find the leak, as the hole appears in the stn. steel bellows that's welded onto the cooler.

Pretty sure the coolant leak near the EGR signifies EGR cooler failure. Fortunately, I believe that is covered under recall / extended warranty in the US
