Plastidip Versus Aftermarket Wheels

I was recently on the fence about getting new black aftermarket wheels or just plastidipping my factory wheels in order to save money. I was really interested in some BBS wheels I found online but at 370 per wheel not including tires and installation I wanted to be sure that black would be a good look. I live in Portland where it's extremely rainy so I had to find a shop to dip my wheels just to see how black wheels would look before investing almost 2k in aftermarket wheels. If anyone has a suggestion on cheap aftermarket black wheels please let me know ! Here's how the dip came out (don't mind my dog)

I have my rims dipped as well. I was on this fence, but I also lease, so I left them that way. Still looks great - not perfect - but much better than the constant brake dust I was getting before.

I have the same rims, but got them powdercoated satin black. Much better if you're going to keep them black permanently - the finish looks great, can be cleaned like normal, and handles road grime (salt, etc) without any issue. Well worth it and cheaper than a fresh set of rims!

I found some very nice BMW OEM wheels on ebay with a black powdercoat paint finish. Very happy with them for $1200 which is killer considering they are real BMW factory OEM wheels. Looks like he is selling some other sets as well some with black or chrome.

Those that have plasti dipped their wheels with M logo...how did you avoid dipping over it? Did you put a piece of tape down and after spraying remove it quickly? Or did you dip over it and cut it out after the job was done?

They look great with your gray 428!

I have my "travel wheels" dipped, yes travel wheels... I travel to NY a lot for family and we put them on when we travel more than 400 miles or so...They are hard to beat in terms of durability for something like that. Looks much better than stock IMO also.

I did not tape the M logo, but plasti dipped over it and then used a razor knife to cut around the logo and peel off the dip over the M logo.

Ok thanks! No pealing or anything because the edges were cut?

Sent them an email and asked if they could send a sample of the colors they offer on paper or something so I can see exactly which flavor I want

Depends if you want performance or not.

Normally good aftermarket wheels (flow formed) provide a substantial weight loss per wheel vs OEM, they cost half of what the forged wheels cost. And you'll feel it in the steering and the car overall, it provides a much better drive, and reduces fuel consumption as your car doesn't have to lug around heavy wheels, they're also stronger as well.

So that 2k investment into wheels is a great one. I had my experience with plasti dip and it just makes the car look cheap. I never touched it again. If you really don't want to spend the money for new wheels, I would look into powdercoating.

I dipped my winter wheels...........hard to wash (peel) and any scratches from gravel etc can loosen it and then it peels. Difficult to get off for lease return. I'd suggest annual cleanup and respray. Mine looked horrible (up close) after 3 winters. To each his own.
