Did you pull this off w/o any trouble? Be glad to share details please.

So in another thread regarding the b48 recalls, a member mentioned that his dealer said his n20 x3 is covered for 7/125. I search and couldn’t find any word regarding BMW extending the warranty from 7/70 to 7/125. Spoke to one of my local dealers and they insisted it’s still 7/70.

Soooooo.....my dealer will be doing the warranty work for me w/o any symptoms. Dropping it off next Monday the 25th with a loaner. Was told that it’ll take 4-5 days? Not really going to question that as I feel the dealer is doing me a big solid here.

No, not while there is an active class action lawsuit.

So this morning I dropped off the car and they have proceeded with the repairs. Again, I had no symptoms but they will notify BMWNA that I complained about ‘rattling noise upon start up’. The service advised informed me that they’ll be replacing the timing chain and guides for oil pump and main chain with guides.

Was given a brand new g20 330 as a loaner. Not bad but I prefer the f3x interior. Steering feels somewhat better but not e90 better. Was told that it will most likely be ready tomorrow.

At this time I am glad my motor blew a year ago, under cop warranty (it literally seized doing a big donut/burnout)

I told them it will sit here with the rest of the failed cars until the class action suit is resolved.

Speaking of that, if you register for a PACER account you can see everything that is going on in the case. Currently there is a telephone conference scheduled next up. BMW was supposed to answer the complaints against them a couple months ago. It has not been filed to date. Makes me wonder if they are going to settle.

Either way, here is the latest court entry for the BMW N20 class action suit...

How did you locate the case in PACER? EIN or just party search for BMW NA?

Just picked up the car about an hour ago. Did a quick glance at the repair order/invoice and lots of crap was changed out. I thought I saw head gasket set but I could be wrong as I know that the valve cover and oil pan gaskets were replaced as well.

I can easily see them replacing "extra" parts as they charge back BMA NA. Dealer is busy and gets paid, you get new parts - everyone's happy.

good luck going forward; very unlikely head gasket would be replaced unless there was specific cause...internal or external leak. post pic the repair work, be curious to see what all was replaced.

I feel rather fortunate that they did this for me w/o symptoms. IIRC, aren’t BMW repairs covered for two years unlimited mileage?

Will post up latest tomorrow. Gotta take a short nap before a long 14 hour drive starting around 11 tonight.

Actually, I googled part # 11-12-7-588-418 and it’s the valve cover gasket which is confusing as it’s listed as Gasket Set; Cylinder Head. The other gasket labeled ‘profile gasket’ part # 11-13-7-627-512 is the oil pan gasket. Therefore, the head gasket was untouched. But yeah, very fortunate and car was great for the 1k mile trip. Doing some further digging into this and it seems that techs are given 10 hours for this job.

possible new bmw 328i owner

Hi everyone im sorry if this question has been asked before as I looked and couldn't find anything. I am on the edge to purchase a used 2014 328i xdrive with 66000 kilometers on it Here in Ontario. Driven by an older lady and well maintained and taken care of. Car looks and feels practically brand new. My only concern is this timing chain issue with these engines. As i did plan on tuning it to stage 1 and it will be mostly used for highway driving. My question to you all is should i just stay away from the n20 engine at this point or is this issue a very low risk type problem. the last thing i want to do is buy the car and always have to worry about it.

Now I did talk to a local BMW dealer sales rep and he told me they can check the chain for me before i purchase the car and that as long as i have all my service records they will take care of the chain issue regardless of warranty if there is ever a problem with it. He said its a lifetime thing. but im not so sure thats accurate information because i did call BMW Canada and they said its covered under extended warranty.

Last question is also if i do plan on getting this car and BMW decided to replace the chain for me when i bring it in for inspection, does it fully fix the issue of the engine having a major engine failure problem? also is this engine a strong and reliable engine to tune without the chain problem or are there more issue i should be concerned with.

Sorry for the long rant. and i appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer, thank you.

It was tricky to find, the case number is 2:2017cv07386

It is the case being held in NJ. GELIS vs BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE

Look for a n20 with a prod date greater than 02/01/15. IMHO it's not worth the risk, especially if you plan on modding

Why would you buy a car that has a ticking time bomb which will likely destroy the engine? Hell no -- stay away from that thing! An inspection of the timing chain is worthless. First of all, there's not much they can tell unless it's on the verge of going out. They would have to pull a lot of parts off to do a comprehensive inspection and there's no way they are going to do that. Even if they did, a lot of people have no symptoms until the engine suddenly grenades. So there's absolutely no way to tell when it will go. And the extended warranty is paltry -- most will fail after 70K, of course.

If you want a 328i the n20 is an otherwise really good engine. But buy a 2016 F30 built 3/15 or after, to get the timing chain fix. 2016 is the first year of LCI (refresh) so you will get some other goodies too. Or buy a 2017 F30 with the new engine and improved small-overlap IIHS score -- if you appreciate having legs.
