I question your theory as well as OP's and everyone else who feels the new improved steering BMW puts in their cars is not far better than the old simple steering. Yes, I fully admit I am in the minority and I have read how all the automotive journalists seem to agree with you, but owning both an M-sport F31 with variable dynamic steering and an old E46 M3 for the last 10 years, I find the new steering far better than the old. My e46 was a high tech car back in 2004 but steers like a bus compared to my M-sport wagon. If I try to make a one-handed 90 degree turn around a corner in my M3 like I do with my F31, it just doesn't make the turn. Second, what is called "road feel", aka, feeling the steering wheel jiggle and bounce over road imperfections, doesn't actually help me navigate a twisting road. Instead it makes my E46 just feel old. OK, I just admitted that the newer electrically controlled steering is more isolated, but it also lets me drive my wagon more confidently on a twisty road than I can with my older M3 which is still in like-new shape with only 36,000 miles on it. My M-Sport Wagon just has a tighter ratio with the dynamic steering.

In fact, the e46 M3 has far and away the slowest rack of any of the e46s. Easily swappable if that's what you desire, but it's not like they didn't do it for a reason-- a slower rack provides greater high speed stability and allows more precise, smoother input. If you don't like feedback, though, can't help you there. EPS is, indeed, your best bet. That said, if I lived on long island, I probably wouldn't want feedback, either. Or an M3, for that matter....

My M3 is fine for my twisty hilly roads of North Shore Long Island- Except after winter when there are potholes everywhere for a few months!

Several cars ago I owned a 3 series touring. It was not fast, but it was a beautiful car. Years ago in the USA, we called these station wagons. I guess we picked up people at the rail station and needed the extra capacity for all the luggage.

a beautiful F31. Those BBS wheels are gorgeous on the car.
I'm not brand loyal, jumping from VW/BMW. Another hot wagon option is coming is the R Golf wagon. I know it cannot compare to the F31 but at 40-45k CDN when it does come over, it's a noticeable savings over the F31. http://www.vwvortex.com/news/volkswa...-la-auto-show/ |

Sadly for those who are looking for performance wagons, the VW Golf R Variant doesn't look like it will be coming to North America.
I'll just leave this here and won't say anymore to dilute this thread. http://www.carscoops.com/2014/11/shu...-plans-to.html Quote:

328d MSport Wagon. I'd say its rare. Atleast in America, possibly Canada.

I didn't realize that. The day I made that comment is the same day I saw a same exact model at a local car meet.

H&R Sport on OEM DHP shocks. It's the first time I've run only springs since I was in my teens LOL. I've been running coilovers for over a decade but I didn't want to loose the ability to switch from Comfort to Sport with the magnetic shocks.
Gotta say that it's not a bad setup for a daily driver. 90% of the comfort of OEM and 85% of the dampening and rebound control of coilovers when you need it. |

Thank you sir! I am in the same boat, tired of messing with coilovers after having them on so many cars. Just want to put springs on my F31 when it gets here and be done with it. |
