After the m performance exhaust was installed, i'm hearing the exhaust flap rattling (very loud and noticeable).

Anyone seen this before? Any ideas?

I haven't looked underneath yet, but am thinking I may need to do the "golf tee mod" to keep the flap open. I've seen two versions of this mod, one with removing a spring, and one with disconnecting a wire. Not sure if both are applicable to my car and which is preferable.

Yea, that might be my plan b....although i prefer the unplugging method to this.

I looked at my oem exhaust and saw this attached to it. I went to reuse it but if you look at the first picture, the grooves don't line up perfectly. I may have to bend it slightly. It's just hard because I don't have a ramp and my car is lowered. Can barely fit one arm in there and difficult to squeeze the spring.

I think I fixed it...kinda. I was able to get the spring to somewhat sit in the groove. It's not in there all the way, but the rattle is gone. I drove to work this morning and it stayed in place the whole way. I'll check it again when I get home tonight. You can see in the picture that the left side is not completely in the groove.

Late to the party, but just thought I'd share some additional info since the exact same thing just happened to me. The angled part of the fixing bow needs to rest in the groove attached to the butterfly valve. The straight part, opposite side, rests in the groove on the actuator. This is because the valve groove and actuator are not exactly parallel. I couldn't get it to fit exactly while installing, so I aligned the bow to the butterfly valve first, then let the actuator "catch" it when it turns by starting the vehicle. Hope that helps anyone else that may come across this issue down the road.

After months of searching, Thank the powers that be that I found this thread. I ordered my fixing bow! That noise on start up was driving me CRAZY . I parked further away then i usually do at work just so less people would notice my broken sounding car.

Probably equal parts loud a** rattle and my insecurity. But in the morning with the echo from my garage, yes it is super loud. Neighbors asked what was wrong with my car. "Is it supposed to sound like that?"

Rattle is GONE!!!!

I'm an idiot though and it took me almost an hour to do it. bc I was jut trying to muscle it in instead actually looking at the module. I should have seen it's attached with 3 bolts. Should have taken me 10 mins to install FYI for anyone in the future get a 10mm socket and you're good to go.

Hey. By rattle do you mean like literally a constant rattle at startup? I have the same exact sound and it actually isn’t opening anymore while in sport. I’ve noticed my burbles are less loud and I have no drone at high gears like I used to. Let me know please. This is frustrating for me

I had the same annoying start up rattle. I took mine in and there is a new ISTEP 18-03-xxx which fixed it for my 340i.

however the car is now too quiet. no burbles, no crackling, nothing!

Just can't get the bow into the slots. I even tried loosening the 10 mm bolds to push the actuator out a little, but since the grooves on the valve and the actuator are not parallel, I couldn't align them.

Are the grooves supposed to be parallel? Does the actuator actually rotate?

P.S: Newbie here (learned and used a torque wrench for the first time today )

Yes, I had to loosed the bolts to the actuator a lot to get it to fit. The bow didn't nicely slip in to the slots, it seems like it is held there more by tension once installed. The slots should be relatively parallel; look at previous photos on this thread to see which part goes where. You should be able to easily move the groove that's on the exhaust fairly easily to match the actuator.

Does anyone with a F22 have a picture of the stock spring positioning from the factory? I have seen pics above with both the curve of the bow in the slot and the straight part of the spring in the flapper valve.

What way is OEM?

Was able to replace a missing fixing bow with help from this thread. Thanks everyone!

The simple install is at the top of this thread. You do not have to remove the bolts and drop the exhaust. Place the bow in the groove of the butterfly valve and using mild finger pressure, squeeze the bow and get the other end of the bow as closely aligned to the actuator groove as possible. Start your engine. The actuator will move and the bow will snap in place. Done!
