B46/B48 Turbo Upgrade

Hey, so I am wanting to see what potential a turbo upgrade really has in store for me. I've gotten some decent power and all with BM3 tunes and downpipe upgrades. Looking for more power in the 320+hp range. I know Pure turbos make a stage 2 upgrade (Link: https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-5...turbo-upgrade/ ) but haven't found any people who have used it or seen what power it can really apply with stock internals and all. If you know or can help give some insight or even a good estimate I'd love it so I can get an Idea if this can be a justified purchase of a kit!

"Stage 2" is typically a downpipe with 93 octane or E30 mix tune for the B48, raising the boost from 12psi to 20psi it reportedly delivers 350whp/tq.

The Pure turbo upgrade for the B48 claims wheel power in the 400s. The first B48 consumer cars coming out of warranty now are being tested. I haven't found someone ready to do it yet. I don't doubt Pure's turbo, I doubt the tuning. Plenty of places run their mouth and the marketing machine works here, then when pressed for details in writing they "will get back to me by the end of day" and fade into the sunset.

Big Boost has another claimed B48 upgrade teased with upgraded engine internals alongside their turbo. Nothing public or consumer reviewed.

Unless you're in a unicorn area we're in uncharted areas for the B48.

There’s no way for 350 whp with stock turbo for b48.

Agreed, It really isn't possible for that on stock turbo or internals without really pushing the limit with meth injection. I am barely pushing 320whp with a stage 2 tune and downpipes. stock turbos can really only handle 18PSI at the peak, with a very little extra room. This was a turbo upgrade itself but I wasn't sure if this was a good purchase or even worth considering. Hopefully, there are gonna be more kits soon for the B48/B46. maybe a custom turbo setup is possible but I'm young and also don't have enough knowledge yet to build something on that level.

I think you are overshooting your expectation of what you are putting down at the wheel for HP. On a 430i not knowing what tune you are using or gas but normal stage 2 93 tune with DP on BM3 puts you in the low 300 crank HP range = about 275 whp. MG flasher is reportedly a little better at 335 crank HP which is still ~291whp. Stage 2 turbo would get you potentially close to 350whp. If you want to get over that you are likely looking at custom turbos, fuelling changes +.

I just installed a downpipe on my 330i B46. I will be getting MG Flasher Stage 2 E50 OTS Map and go on the dyno to get the numbers. On BM3 Stage 1 E30 with no other mods I got 253WHP/314TQ in a 93° day. I was also having PCV & VANOS issues that I wasn't aware of that are now fixed and the car feels better.

Pretty good numbers with only Stage 1 E30. Fixing your issues along with a DP moving to stage 2 E50 should be a decent bump. Would expect to see right around ~300whp. Would be interested in seeing the dyno for sure.

BM3 OTS maps for N20/26 & B46/48 platforms are not great and way too cautious. I wish MG flasher made a tune for the N20 I would definitely move to that platform.

I know that MG flasher has stuff for the B46 but I don't know the extent of how good those tunes are, I've also shied away from those because they seem too new to know enough about. Thanks for the insight though! I really wish MHD had a B46 or B48 tune because their tunes are so well done, and include such amazing features like rolling anti-lag and more OTS style maps.

Mgflasher tunes are good! I’m using them for 1,5 years. Also they are experienced people and not amateurs. Don’t know what else to say. I was completely satisfied with everything mgflasher related for that 1,5 years period.

Sadly, currently rolling anti-lag and flex fuel only available for S55 engine on BM3. Hopefully they will release such feature to B series engine

After a while I've been looking at JB4 for right now because of me currently being unable to send out my ECU to get the DME blocker removed from my ECU that was put on during service recently. I think they're good but I wish I could pick up and continue with BM3 or MG Flasher but can't flash the ECU for a little while. I know JB4 works and adapts with stuff like turbo upgrades and more, but do they allow custom tuning? I know there is not much customization with their extent of piggyback tunes.

Yes it has custom map where you can change some settings including boost level. However JB4 is not a proper tune. Actually it’s not a tune at all. I was using JB4 just before moving to mgflasher. Had been playing with custom map settings for a while with some success actually.

I agree with Drona. While the JB4 isn't a proper tune, it offers the most customisability amongst piggybacks. I was in the same position and I'm running a custom map 6 on my JB4 for now. And I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah, and for right now in my current situation it seems like my only option because i can't flash the ECU for a little bit. good to know also does it remove the light and code from the 02 sensors? in catless and couldn't code it out yet. Thanks!

You're welcome! And no unfortunately. Piggybacks can't get rid of CELs from DPs. Only a proper flash tune can.

Damn, was really hoping it would, is there another solution maybe through coding that it is possible? I can't flash at the moment and am not able to send a DME out to kies motorsports or others to get the DME blocker removed.

JB4 have automatic cel delete function. I didn’t had any problems with that.

I don't think it can be coded out. I know you can't use Bimmercode to code it out. I believe flashing a proper tune is the only way.

I think it's because it became illegal here in america to automatically turn CELs off. Or something similar. Which is why they stopped disabling it automatically. You can clear it but it will turn back on after a while. I think they changed it towards the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020.

At some point I was driving with catless downpipe and no tune or JB4 for couple of weeks and CEL didn’t appeared.

Yes. I've heard of some people being lucky and it wouldn't appear even after a few hundred miles of driving. And some others being unlucky with it being present all the time. It's a hit or a miss. Did you have a spacer installed to prevent CELs?
